The experience of Botswana, highlighted in this presentation by the project team, shows that mainstreaming biodiversity needs a champion in government, and the added value of mainstreaming must be easy to understand.

The slides were presented at the ‘Biodiversity mainstreaming’ workshop held in Sogakope, Ghana, from 1-3 November 2016.

Processes influenced • Vision 2036 (sustainable environment chapter included) • NDP 11 (activities from NBSAP and other plans that promote BD conservation included) • District Development Plan (Tutume and Lethakane Sub Districts) • Urban Development Plans (Francistown) • Development of the NSSD (ensures SD across sectors)
  3. 3. Change achieved/Expected • Expect increased BD financing in the next NDP; and Private sector financing • Increased policy reviews with the view to include BD Conservation • EMA • EA Act • Increase in stakeholder involvement in BD management • Increased position of BD in the Economy.
  4. 4. Lessons about successful mainstreami ng • Importance of continuous stakeholder engagement • Appropriate tools for specific sectors • Ensure that the value for mainstreaming is clear and easy to understand • Need for harmonisation of legislation & policies • Mainstreaming needs a Champion

Challenges to be addressed • NSSD • Need to ensure that BD takes prominence in the Building Blocks process of the NSSD • A Demonstration Project on mainstreaming at the local level, which can be replicated nationwide • Capacity building/training on mainstreaming on key sectors especially at District levels. • Establishment of strong linkages of biodiversity with other development processes.
