TYPES OF BULLYING Although the media likes to portray bullying as a big thuggish student stealing your lunch money, there are other types of equally harmful but more discreet bullying. • Physical- bullying someone with violence • Verbal- bullying someone by name-calling and insults • Relational- bullying someone by damaging their reputation • Cyberbullying- bullying someone through the internet

EFFECTS OF BULLYING Immediate • Depression • Loss of interest in activities • Increased levels of aggressive behavior • Health problems like headaches, stomach aches • Suicidal thoughts (and even suicide) Long Term • Self blame • Missing school • Loneliness and social anxiety • Social withdrawal and isolation • Loss of self-esteem • Anxiety
  4. 4. THE BYSTANDER’S ROLE Even if you don’t participate in bullying, you can still be part of the problem. One of the main reasons a bully bullies others is because it makes them feel good about themselves. By watching someone get bullied, you are giving the bullies positive attention and showing them that they are interesting when they bully others. Don’t be a bystander!
  5. 5. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP You don’t have to be a bystander. There are many ways to help stop bullying, like: • Tell an authoritative figure, and give them all the evidence you have of it • If you know someone who gets bullied, let them know that you support them no matter what • Avoid, and encourage other to do the same, participating in conversations that slander someone • If, and only if, you feel comfortable doing it, rally your peers and let the bully know that what he is doing is not okay

GET INVOLVED Cool Websites: www.bullying.org- general information www.erasebullying.ca- general information www.stopabully.ca- report bullies Get Involved: Pink Shirt Day- show your support for anti-bullying by wearing a pink shirt. Started by a group of kids who stepped up to stop a bully. Anti-Bullying Week- brings awareness to anti-bullying causes The Bully Project- an organization that aims to stop bullying by educating students about it.
  7. 7. CYBERBULLYING Don’t put anything stupid on the internet If people are bullying you on the internet, get off it. Its that simple.
