  1. 1. April 1st 1999, Govt. of India restructured the Comprehensive Rural Sanitation Programme and launched the Total Sanitation Campaign April 1st 2012, TSC was renamed as Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan by Former PM Manmohan Singh NBA was restructured by cabinet approval on 24th September 2014 as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It was launched on 2nd October 2014.
  2. 2. “Has it ever pained us that our mothers and sisters have to defecate in open? Poor womenfolk of the village wait for the night; until darkness descends, they can`t go out to defecate. What bodily torture they must be feeling, how many diseases that act might engender. Can't we just make arrangements for toilets for the dignity of our mothers and sisters?” – PM Narendra Modi, Independence day 2014 “When the girl student reaches the age where she realises this lack of female toilets in the school she leaves her education midway. As they leave their education midway they remain uneducated. Our daughters must also get equal chance to quality education. After 60 years of independence there should have been separate toilets for girl students in every school. But for the past 60 years they could not provide separate toilets to girls and as result the female students had to leave their education midway.” -PM Narendra Modi, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election, 2014
  3. 3. Launch Of SBA Launched on 2nd October 2014, Same day as Gandhi Jayanti the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is aimed to achieve an Open-defecation free India by 2019 marking the 150th birth anniversary of the father of our nation. It is also started to create awareness among the youth both in urban and rural areas about the importance of hygiene and cleanliness for healthy lifestyle.
  4. 4. AIM • Elimination of open defecation • Eradication of Manual Scavenging • Modern and Scientific Municipal Solid Waste Management • To effect behavioural change regarding healthy sanitation practices • Generate awareness about sanitation and its linkage with public health • Capacity Augmentation for ULB’s • Household toilets, conversion of insanitary latrines into pour-flush latrines; • Community toilets • Public toilets • Solid waste management • IEC & Public Awareness Mission Components
  5. 5. 29,18,66 Individual Toilets Constructed 1,10,665 Community and Public Toilets Constructed 442 cities are Open Defecation Free 39,995 Wards have 100% door to door waste collection. SO FAR…
  6. 6. Individual Household Latrines (IHHL) • IHHL application forms allows people to apply for the construction of latrines in their household. • The applicants have to provide ID proof along with other details mentioned on the Swachh Bharat website. • This allows individuals to get direct access to seek their needs and increases transparency of the mission. • IHHL website - http://swachhbharaturban.gov.in/ihhl/
  7. 7. Sikkim with 100% implementation of IHHL is the highest followed by West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Assam has the lowest percentage of IHHL at 0.31% followed by Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur
  8. 8. Challenges • Location of solid waste management plant is difficult. A proper and clean technology/methodology for degradation and recycling of solid waste has not been developed so far in India. • Most towns have been provided with partial sewerage systems but very few have well designed sewage treatment plant. • People don’t use the toilets constructed for them. They instead store cattle feed in the rooms and still practice open defecation.
  9. 9. Game Changer • In India insanitation is the main reason behind epidemic diseases. By 02/10/2019 India will usher into Health for All if Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is achieved. • A sanitary environment is directly linked to India’s standard of living. Poverty is half less painful in a clean environment. Infact a clean environment is a basic need like air and water. Therefore, working towards achieving this mission would be a game changer for our nation.
