1. ABOUT ISFAA

4. AIM OF THE FORUM
• To provide a platform through which stakeholders at the intersection of
biodiversity conservation and agricultural production can interact to
discuss, share knowledge and information, influence policy, fundraise,
implement joint programmes, and monitor and review progress towards
mainstreaming biodiversity and ecosystem services in the agricultural
sector and landscapes.

5. OBJECTIVES OF THE FORUM (1)
i. Link policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and end-users in the area of agrobiodiversity and
agroecology
ii. Create awareness on the importance of biodiversity to agricultural production and threats to
biodiversity from agriculture and advocate for the mainstreaming of biodiversity and agroecology
in agrarian policies and landscapes
iii. Advice the national and county governments in developing appropriate policies, legislations,
programmes and projects on agrobiodiversity and make recommendations on how to mainstream
biodiversity in agriculture
iv. Ensure strategic and wide public participation in policy-making and other international processes
and commitments
v. Promote policy-relevant research that highlights the challenges, potential and opportunities
offered by agroecology and agrobiodiversity in achieving food and nutrition security, biodiversity
conservation, health, land degradation neutrality (LDN), etc.

6. OBJECTIVES OF THE FORUM (2)
vi. Document and share best practices, knowledge, information, and technologies on
biodiversity mainstreaming in agriculture amongst stakeholders and the general
public
vii. Monitor and review progress towards implementation of the Aichi Targets related
to agriculture, national policies, legislations and programmes
viii. Maintain a record of relevant agrobiodiversity projects, guide and harmonise their
implementation in consultation with the relevant stakeholders
ix. Fundraise and mobilize resources to undertake the above and any additional
activities
x. Make policy recommendations

8. Summary of ISFAA Activities
i. Supporting review and/or development of relevant policies, legislations, and regulations at national and
county levels
• Submissions on various draft Bills and regulations (Plant protection Bill, DRM Strategy, NR Benefit sharing bill, Guidelines on
stacked GMOs, etc)
• Supporting development of regulations on farmer managed seed systems (FMSS)/indigenous seeds
• Development of SoPs on ABS for GRFA
ii. Supporting public participation in and domestication of relevant international treaties and conventions
• Inclusion of agroecology in the post-2020 biodiversity framework
• Inclusion of agroecology in Kenya’s position to the UNFSS 2021
iii. Integration of agroecology and agrobiodiversity in curriculum/education system
• Review of curriculum (Universities, TVETs, extension wokers)
