Agribusiness entrepreneurship: a lifeline • The sector is a lifeline— 65% of poor working adults relied on agriculture for their livelihoods in 2016. • Overall, food and agribusiness is a US$ 5 trillion industry that represents 10 percent of global consumer spending, 40 percent of employment, and 30 percent of greenhouse-gas emissions. • In Egypt, 25% of Egypt’s GDP, more than 50% of Egyptians livelihood, and of the economy when aggregating formal and informal sector ; 86% of the country water resources.

Agribusiness entrepreneurship: a challenge • The World Bank statistics feature agribusiness SMEs as the largest workforce in both developed and developing countries. • Population growth, changing appetites and rising food demand are fueling growth in the food and agriculture sector. • If current trends continue, by 2050, caloric demand will increase by 70 percent, and crop demand for human consumption and animal feed will increase by at least 100 percent, in spite of productivity gains thus highlighting food security as a critical issue. • However, according to CBE statistics, agriculture represents only 5% of the SMEs incentives program providing 5% interest and start-ups are not yet acknowledged by the banking sector.
