1. 1. Setting up a Tent Scott Martin SPC101 February 8, 2008
 2. 2.

The experience I will be talking about happens before all the enjoyment of the nightly campfires.

 3. 3. Items you will need

Tent Bag (complete with tent, poles and stakes)

Rubber Mallet

Sleeping Bags

Clothes

 4. 4. Step One
 5. 5. Picking out the site
 6. 6. There are a few things that you need to remember while picking out a site:

Make sure the site is clear of any ruts, rocks, and sticks

try to find a spot that the tent can be slightly elevated from

the ground around it, so that if it rains the water will flow

away from your tent instead of forming puddles under or around it.

 7. 7. Don’t let this happen to you
 8. 8. Step Two
 9. 9. Lay the tarp down

Spread the tarp out on the spot that the tent will sit upon.

Not only do tarps add cushion, but they also protect the tent floor from dirt and moisture

 10. 10. Step Three
 11. 11. Position the Tent

Decide which direction the tent should face

East for an early start

West for sleeping in

Spread the tent out on the tarp

 12. 12. Step Four
 13. 13. Assemble the Poles

Modern day tent poles are designed for convenience

 14. 14.

Connect the poles by inserting the ends together

 15. 15.

There should be two different sizes of poles (note that tents/poles vary)

Longer poles pass through the upper sleeves and cross in the center

Shorter poles pass through the sleeves in the front and back

 16. 16. The ends of each pole will fit into a ring which is located on the tent itself. This is what stabilizes the tent poles.
 17. 17. Step Five
 18. 18. Stake the Tent Down

Check the tent for correct positioning before staking it down

Use the rubber mallet to hammer the stakes through the loops and into the ground

Make sure the corners are pulled tight to ensure proper tent set-up

 19. 19. Enjoy the Camping Experience

The campfire is crackling, you are roasting marshmallows

Sit back and relax and admire a job well done
