16. 16. Intro to Balance: AWS Challenges © Copyright Katherine Korman Frey, no duplication without permission www.HotMommasProject.org, 202.237.8000
 17. 17. Challenge Examples

Self/Expectations

“ Making time for a personal/family life. There is always something to do, either work at the hospital, research projects or attending lectures/participating in extra-curricular activities. It is very easy to get caught up in work and deadlines and not fit in the time to take care of myself physically and mentally, or spend time with friends and loved ones.”

Responsibilities

“ You can't hire out all home duties. Sometimes I wish I had a stay at home significant other, as I see how much more my colleagues get done if they have a stay at home significant other to manage the household for them. Home responsibilities can be a time sink.”

Others / Expectations

“ The demands of men in the field who think that balance means that you are not dedicated to your job, or at least not as dedicated as they are.”

© Copyright Katherine Korman Frey, no duplication without permission www.HotMommasProject.org, 202.237.8000

 20. 20. © Copyright Katherine Korman Frey, no duplication without permission www.HotMommasProject.org, 202.237.8000
 21. 21. Solution Examples

Support

“ Hire out as much housework as possible (yard, cleaning, laundry, etc); eat healthy frozen dinners or crockpot stuff or grilled stuff as much as possible. Spend home time doing home things until after bedtime for the munchkin and husband.”

“ Living close to my extended family and asking for their help.”

“ Out source everything, do not do dishes, laundry, get school supplies etc, when I'm home I do things with my kids.”

“ A SUPPORTIVE SPOUSE”

© Copyright Katherine Korman Frey, no duplication without permission www.HotMommasProject.org, 202.237.8000
 22. 22. Solution Examples

Perspective

“ I have to constantly remind myself that while work is important, my family is more important. Getting lazy with my family life has much bigger and more long term consequences than getting lazy in my career.”

“ Ongoing enjoyment of all facets of my life, kids, family, work, hobbies, create the balance. Regular exercise, yoga and a supportive flexible spouse (and regular communication with spouse about his scheduling needs/ my schedule) are key. Knowing my own personal limits (re physical ability to do frequent night call/ how much sleep I need ) is helpful as well.”

“ I try to think what will bring me most happiness.”

© Copyright Katherine Korman Frey, no duplication without permission www.HotMommasProject.org, 202.237.8000
 23. 23. Solution Examples

Organization / Boundaries

“ I keep a record of what I consider to be my major life goals for the year and steps to get there on a quarterly basis. I review that document at least twice a month and make short term "to-do"lists. I also keep perspective and listen to my husband's reminders to relax so that I avoid being too driven.”

“ My husband and I have a shared calendar to help coordinate our call schedules (he's a cardiology fellow).”

“ Being organized! Calling family in the car and walking between clinics, etc. Maximizing every few minutes off/not busy/walking. Smartphones for email, etc in elevators!”

“ Obsessive time management”

“ Limiting up front the number of patients seen is the most effective way of finding balance.”

“ I have learned to say "no" to my dean and my spouse when I cannot stretch my available time farther.”

© Copyright Katherine Korman Frey, no duplication without permission www.HotMommasProject.org, 202.237.8000
