5 things every homeowner needs to know about termites

  1. 1. *AboutTermites
  2. 2. *Termites are a $2 billion problem. Every year, theyspend their time eating through homes andbusinesses, leaving only chaos behind. Are you ready?Do you know what you should about termites?
  3. 3. *Termites require just three things for survival –water, food, and soil. They can find all of those itemsaround your home, but there are ways to make yourhome slightly less attractive. For example, eliminating leaky faucets and pipes andvegetation too close to your home could help to makecertain you stay away from termite problems.
  4. 4. *There are two basic kinds of termites – subterranean anddrywood. Drywood termites tend to create damage that looksfairly smooth on the surface. Subterranean termites build mudtubes from the ground up into your home. Their level ofdamage is far more severe.
  5. 5. *The first sign many notice are theswarmers, and while this iscertainly a potential sign of aproblem, it isn’t the problemitself. Swarmers are looking for anew colony. They don’t have theability to eat wood or even sting. They’re just a nuisance. Occurringmostly in the spring, they’re asolid tip-off.
  6. 6. *Outside of swarmers, there are actually a number ofdifferent potential warning signs that you have atermite infestation on your hands. You may seediscarded wings around your home. You may alsonotice the mud tubes. If the infestation is too bad,you may also begin to notice sagging floors ordoorways.
  7. 7. * TermitePreventionOwning a home doesn’t necessarilyput you at risk for termite infestation. There are several things you can do toprevent the problem. Keep your homefree of leaks. Keep mulch andvegetation away from the base ofyour home. You should also keep yourwood pile several feet from yourhome. If you don’t, you’re just askingfor an infestation.
  8. 8. *Just because you notice you have a termite problemdoesn’t mean that they’ve already made your homeunlivable or even that it’s going to cost thousands torepair. Termites eat fairly slowly, so it is possible thatyou’ve caught them at an early phase.
  9. 9. *The best thing you can do if younotice termites is to call in theprofessionals. They can assess thelevel of damage and come upwith a way to get rid of theexisting colony and prevent newones from coming in.
