Presentation (PPS - 1 Mb)

 1. 1. HYBRID CARS: An Essential Piece of the Puzzle Phil von Hake / PvH Communications CMC Renewable Energy Forum / March 3, 2007
 2. 2. Hybrid Basics

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) = Gasoline Engine + Electric Motor + Batteries

“ No, You Don’t Have to Plug it in!”

Momentum from Wheels Helps Recharge Batteries

 3. 3. Hybrids Have Been Around Longer than You Think! This car, made by the Krieger Company in 1903, was one of thousands of electric and hybrid cars being produced at the time. It used a gasoline engine to supplement a battery pack. Henry Ford’s assembly line and the advent of the self-starting gas engine signaled the rapid decline in hybrid cars by 1920.
 4. 4. Hybrid Advantages

Higher Gas Mileage

MUCH Lower Emissions

Better Acceleration & Torque

Longer Vehicle Life (e.g. Toyota’s 100K Mile Warranty)

Lower Life-Cycle Costs

HOV, Parking, & Other Privileges …

 5. 5. “ The PvH PRIUS”
 6. 6. Fuel Savings:

Lifetime MPG in Low-to-Mid 40s (with lead foot)

Average 500 miles between fill-ups

Uses Regular Gas

 7. 7. Emission Savings:

“ Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle” (SULEV)

“ Electric-Only” mode (especially when idling)

“ Ready” for Carbon Regulation … !

 8. 8. COST Savings:

More time between fill-ups

Much more time between regular service

Uses Regular Gas

“ Emissions Exempt !”

Tax Savings

Insurance Savings … ?

Carbon Taxes … ???

 9. 9. Limitations and Challenges

Vehicle Choices

Electric-Only Limitations

Tires … ?!

Battery Costs … ?

Battery Material Shortages … ??

Availability of Service … ???

 15. 15. Plug-In Hybrids: Even More Essential

Much Longer Electric-Only Range

100+ MPG with “Gasoline Backup”

Zero Emissions for Most Driving

Centralized Emissions for Electric Power

Plug In at Night – the Grid can take it!

Cars Powered by Renewable Energy!

www.pluginpartners.org

 16. 16. The Smart Grid and “V2G”

Smart Grid: electricity goes both ways

Vehicle to Grid (V2G): Get more than 2 hours a day from your car … !

Increase Distributed Generation

More chances for cars to be powered by Renewable Energy!

 17. 17. The Future … ?

Hybrids become a “drivetrain option”

Much more to choose from

More Flexible & Adaptable Technologies

More dire circumstances will encourage more creativity

 18. 18. Conclusions

Hybrids only a “2% Solution,” but still essential!

More fuels to supplement petroleum: biofuels, alcohols, electricity , etc.

More integration with more energy infrastructures

 19. 19. Conclusions

AND Hybrids are still not as “essential” as

Simple Energy Efficiency (i.e. car tuned up & clean, tires fully inflated, smooth driving)

Energy Conservation (i.e. combining trips, driving less )

And other alternatives (transit, bikes, walking, etc.)
