Election of 1800 <ul><li>Republican-society different from Hamilton and the Federalists. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Nation of farmers, living under a central government that establishes little control. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Free from industrial smoke and urban blight. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Projected an image of democratic simplicity, brilliant thinker. </li></ul><ul><li>Appointed cabinet members who agreed with his policies. </li></ul>

Marbury vs. Madison <ul><li>William Marbury (midnight appointment) sued Madison to force delivery of his commission as a justice of the peace. </li></ul><ul><li>John Marshall-refused to rule on the request, claimed that the law which gave the Supreme Court power exceeded the rules, and was therefore unconstitutional. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Established Judicial review-Supreme Court's check on power. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The impeachment of many judges will follow. </li></ul>

Domestic Affairs <ul><li>Alien and Sedition Acts became suspended </li></ul><ul><li>Cut spending on federal expenses and the military and Navy. </li></ul><ul><li>12 th Amendment-ensured that a tie vote between candidates of the same party could not again cause an election confusion. </li></ul><ul><li>Importation of slaves was stopped by 1808. </li></ul>

Yazoo Claims <ul><li>John Randolph (Republican opponent) accused the president of complicity in the Yazoo Land controversy which followed Georgia's cession of western lands to the federal government. </li></ul><ul><li>Created strife within the Republican party and weakened Jefferson's second term. </li></ul>

Public outcry for war </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Embargo of 1807 </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Drafted law prohibiting American ships from leaving port for any foreign destination. Caused economic depression. Most unpopular policy. </li></ul></ul>
