  2. 2.  The Party of European Socialists(PES) is a social-democratic Europeanpolitical party; it consists of national-level political parties mostly frommember states of the European Union(EU), as well as non-EU states. The member parties of the PESthemselves are members of SocialistInternational. The PES makes up the ProgressiveAlliance of Socialists and Democrats(S&D) in the European parliament; italso functions in the Committee of theRegions and the European Council. Its current leader is Sergei Stanishev,ex-PM of Bulgaria.
