The New York Metropolitan area includes New York City, the most
populous city in the United States, counties consisting of Long Island
and the Mid- and Lower Hudson Valley in the state of New York, the
six biggest cities in New Jersey (Newark, Jersey City, Paterson,
Elizabeth, Trenton, and Edison) and their neighborhoods, six of the
seven biggest cities in Connecticut (Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford,
Waterbury, Norwalk, and Danbury) and their neighborhoods, and five
counties in Northeastern Pennsylvania, such as Allentown, its thirdbiggest city.
As of the 2012 United States Census Bureau, the New York
metropolitan area, by a large margin, is still the United States’ most
populous, under both the Metropolitan Statistical Area definition (19.8
million) as well as under the Combined Statistical Area definition (23.4
million); it is additionally one of the world’s most populous urban
agglomerations.
The MSA covers 6,720 sq mi (17,405 km2), where as the CSA is
13,318 sq mi (34,493 km2), including a culturally and geographically
varied region.
As a center of various industries, such as finance, global trade, media
and entertainment, tourism, biotechnology, and manufacturing, it is
one of the world’s most important financial regions.
