1. Sports Medicine Capstone Assignment
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this assignment, the student will:
Research an aspect of Athletic Training or Medical case study of their choice and produce a
professional paper and presentations on the topic.
Demonstrate their ability to read critically, write effectively, communicate effectively through
speech, and think critically and creatively.
o Perform literature review, demonstrating ability to read critically and think critically
o Write a research paper, demonstrating ability to write effectively and creatively
o Present their project in formal oral presentations, demonstrating ability to speak
effectively
Demonstrate their ability to engage in the analysis of quantitative or qualitative research and
evaluate ethical considerations in that research during their literature review.
Demonstrate their ability to use technology to support their project.
Course Structure/Approach
Students will be working independently during their research. They will have bi-weekly contact with
Mr. Burgess to assure progress on their project through the semester and to provide mentoring for the
student in order to assure the student learning outcomes are achieved.
Textbook and Required Materials
No required text or materials. The student will be performing a3-5 page literature review of their own.
This review will include 7-10 sources, minimally.
Suggested Outline ( after you are done choosing a topic an individual
outline must be turned into Mr. Burgess )
Week Topic
1 Choose a topic and research format
Create a research plan – how you will gather the data/literature
2 Create a title and brief outline; begin to research your topic
Create an abstract and send to Mr. Burgess
3 Extend the outline with greater detail
Begin to write!
4 Complete writing of first segment – intro and overview
Complete writing of second segment – methods and results or body of paper
5 Complete writing of final segment – discussion / conclusions / recommendations
Submit rough draft of complete paper 3-5 pages
6 Create power point presentation (10 minutes); submit final electronic abstract to Mr. Burgess
