Health Literacy in Derbyshire
Our Journey So Far: an overview
Plan Your Journey
Get the Thumbs Up from Your Leaders
Just Get Started
Train Your Workforce
Go on the Journey Together
Evaluate Your Adventure
Keep Going
Plan Your Journey
Understand what health literacy is and why it is
important
How will it support your local healthcare priorities?
What impact will this journey have on your workforce,
your services and your residents?
Get the Thumbs Up from Your Leaders
Their strategic influence and approval of resources will
be essential.
Make sure they know where you are heading and keep
them on board with regular updates.
Otherwise your journey is likely to be quite short or may
not even get started!
Just Get Started
Do a trial run with a willing team in your department or
organisation.
Then use that learning to look a little further afield.
You do not have to start with a marathon – take one
step at a time.
In conversation with…
Hayley Gleeson
Service Manager for the Stop Smoking Service
Live Life Better Derbyshire
Train Your Workforce
Find ways to raise awareness of health literacy with
your workforce.
Then support them to turn their learning into
practice.
Teach
Back
Almost 700 people from the wider public health workforce have completed health literacy
awareness training
A wide range of roles, teams, services, departments, and organisations have attended the
commissioned virtual sessions.
Managers, as well as front line staff, completed the training allowing greater opportunity to
embed the approach through policy, commissioning and service development.
Who Has Been Trained So Far and How?

E-Learning
What difference has the training made?
Pre-training 14% said they had a good or very good understanding of health
literacy.
This rose to 96.9% post-training.
97.2% said that their confidence to adapt their communication for people’s
health literacy needs had increased or increased greatly as a result of the
training.
The opportunity for whole teams/services to be trained in health literacy
awareness has supported them to become more health literate (e.g. audit of
Diabetes Education Service)
Some examples of what’s been put into practice
I have used the readability tool and
used images when producing
information leaflets for patients
Developing resources
for patients in the
Post-Covid Syndrome
Service
We included HL in our
contracts to encourage
providers to apply HL.
We apply HL techniques to
our School Crossing Patrol
service.
I actively encourage colleagues to use
less complicated language during
meetings and to explain all the
abbreviations they use. And I encourage
my team to do the same when minuting
meetings.
I have made my language simpler
when talking to families and I show
them diagrams or pictures to
explain what I am talking about.
For example when talking about
life story work.
Analysis of
demographics data
found lower opt-in rate in
people from more
deprived areas, where
health literacy was
known to be lower.
Worked with the
service to embed
evidence-based
health literacy friendly
approaches e.g.
group delivery,
materials, processes.
Health Literacy audit of
service conducted: Scored
53/108 ‘Working Towards’.
The areas for improvement
were identified.
Re-audited for health
literacy, rated 104/108
‘Excellence’. Opt-in
data is being
collected.
The service is now
continuing this work with
the help of 2 “health
literacy champions”. DCHS’s Diabetes
Education Service:

me feel really proud.”

leaflet.
Go on the Journey Together
Learn from others who are ahead of you.
Recognise existing approaches that align with health literacy and strengthen
those links.
Make connections and develop relationships with a range of people across
your healthcare system.
Find the people, teams & services who have the passion and capacity to join
you on your journey right now.
And then go back and check if anyone wants to join you at a later stage.
Evaluate Your Adventure
Plan how you are going to evaluate right from the start.
Keep reflecting on how things are going.
Listen to what others are saying and not saying.
Celebrate what is working well.
Share what you learn.
Be prepared to change your plans as you go along.
Keep Going
Keep looking for opportunities to extend your journey
and expand your horizons.
Keep banging the health literacy drum!
So what next on our health literacy journey?
• Continue to support those already trained
• Support more teams/services/organisations across Derbyshire to become more health
literate
• Find out from patients and service users what would be useful to them in their
conversations about health
• Strengthen health literacy’s position in the Derbyshire healthcare system
• Seek further ways to evaluate the approach and show impact
Any Questions?
