  2. 2. Rectal prolapse befalls when part of the rectum becomes overextended and overhangs from the anus. There are three kinds of rectal prolapse:  Partial prolapse befalls when the lining (mucous membrane) of the rectum slithers out of place, usually when you strain to have a bowel movement.  Complete prolapse befalls when the wall of the rectum slithers out of place and overhangs from of the anus.  Internal prolapse is also called intussusception. This befalls when one part of the wall of the large intestine or rectum slips into or over another part.
