Hazel ThumathBranding HAZEL THUMATH WHO IS MY AUDIENCE? Ideally someone who’s going to give me a job somewhere fun doing graphic design and illustration. I want them to get an honest feeling for who I am and how I work from the brand I project. HOW DO I STAND OUT FROM MY PEERS? I’m very honest (often brutally so). I take my work seriously, not myself. I like problem solving and being in charge. WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO? Because I like it! I like to be creative and create images but I also like problem solving and maths; in graphic design I can find a balance.
Hazel ThumathBrand Values: I ALWAYS VALUE: • Working where I can demostrate my proficiency in my skills and knowledge (ie showing off). • Engaging with complex problems, questions and demanding tasks - I won’t deny I can be a bit of a geek. • Dealing with tasks that require attention to detail and exact specifications - I’m very good at being a perfectionist but also very good at being lazy. But if a task is set I will do it - so I work best when perfection is required. • Getting positive feedback and recognition for work I do well - I guess it comes with the showing off bit! But who doesn’t like to be acknowledged for work well done? • Working with aesthetics: the beauty of things, ideas and structures. Obviously. Or I wouldn’t be studying graphic design. • Being able to choose exactly how to spend my money... Who am I kidding. I’m a student, i don’t have money.
Hazel ThumathBrand Values: AND SOME OTHER STUFF I THINK IS IMPORTANT TOO: • Working under pressure. Never missed a deadline yet (knock on wood) and failure is not an option for me! • Social status (totes wanna look cool in front of my friends and whanau). • Being in an environment where I am constantly learning new knowledge. I’m lazy when it comes to research but am inquisitive in other ways and like to be constantly learning. I’m one of those really annoying people that always has something to say in class. Nothing quite like a philosophical discussion with the tutor. • Friendships (awww). • Contact with people (nobody wants to be alone). • Decision making. Not that I’m necessarily all that good at it. But I like to be in charge. I can be pretty bossy. • Competition. The best kind of motivation. • Excitement! Stimulative atmospheres to get the creative juices flowing. Even if it’s just music. • Feeling that my life is contributing to ideals and causes I feel are important.
Hazel ThumathBrand Values: ...AND STUFF I DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT: • Low pressure and casual work environments... I get bored. I need to have something to do all the time when I’m working. • Physical activities. At least not in the workplace. • Being active in local politics, working for the community, blah blah blah. I appreciate that other people enjoy it. I’m much too selfish for that. • Being alone. Sucks. I like constant feedback. Probably one of the big reasons I chose art and design over maths and science. • Working in predictable circumstances. Something’s got to change some time. • Working for a big company with limited responsibities. A summer on Mitre 10 Mega checkouts was enough of that experience for me.
Hazel ThumathBrand Values: IN SUMMARY... I’m a student in Graphic Design at AUT. I love illustration, design and being creative. For fear of revealing myself as a geek I also love maths and problem solving. I hate being bored and I love being the centre of attention. I am a little more vain than I would perhaps like to admit. And I am often told I am hard to read... I think it’s the sarcastic sense of humour. I appreciate that there a lot of contradictions in how I like to work and this reflects in my design style. As a graphic designer I favour simplicity; as a painter and illustrator I love detail, decoration and colour! I like to create work with meaning... but I also just like to make things look pretty and maybe a bit cool. I often consider myself a perfectionist and am admittedly a bit OCD about stupid things (like making all my coat hangers face the same way in the wardrobe). So I work best when perfection is required... but I am also very good at being lazy :)
