One common problem that yoga can often help alleviate is stress. Many factors can affect a person’s stress level, including heavy workloads, family trouble, fear or uncertainty, and major life changes. Stress may manifest itself through physical symptoms like headaches, body tension, fatigue, stomach aches, and irritability.

The practice encourages individuals to maintain deep, slow nasal breathing that causes the stomach to expand and contract, which ultimately increases the body’s oxygen intake. Improved blood flow and higher oxygen levels help relax cells within the body, allowing it to let go of tension and reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
