Yoga has long been recognized as a way to improve flexibility and posture, but it also has a number of benefits for mental and emotional health. The deep breathing and meditative practices of yoga help practitioners quiet the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the fight-or-flight stress response. As a result, yogis leave class feeling calmer and less anxious than when they began. In addition to calming anxiety, yoga has been shown to improve symptoms of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders, especially in children. Teachers across the country have begun incorporating yoga into their daily activities, helping their students improve focus and behavior in the classroom.
