FANS 101
In our age of air conditioners, fans are often forgotten as cooling
fixtures. However, we believe that the fan still has plenty to offer, which
is why we’re going to give you the low-down about fans!

Fans have been in use since
antiquity. Any broad, flat surface
that can be waved back and
forth will create airflow, and thus
becomes a rudimentary fan. By
increasing airflow over the skin, the
evaporation of sweat droplets on
the surface is increased, along with
heat convection. This is due to the
displacing of warmer air produced
by body heat that surrounds
the skin.
East Asian cultures used fans
not only for dancing; they were
also part of formal costumes in
court. European cultures, however,
adopted folding fans in the 17th
Century. These were introduced
from Asia, and were loved by
noblewomen because they could
be made with exotic and luxuriant
materials.
In modernity, fans consist of a
rotating arrangement of blades with
a rotor. Most fans are powered by
electric motors. These fans produce
wind flow with high volume and low
pressure, and are typically used to
create a wind chill by increasing the
heat transfer coefficient.
Ceiling fans actually rotate much more
slowly than table fans. It cools the space
effectively, introducing slow movement
into a still space filled with hot air and
inducing evaporative cooling. The first
ceiling fans appeared as early as the
1860s, and were powered by a stream
of running water in conjunction with
a turbine, driven by a system of belts!
Thankfully, technology has progressed
since then.

Kill two birds with one stone with
this wonderful ceiling fan, which
incorporates an LED light. This
eliminates the headache you might
encounter when deciding on the
perfect place in which to position your
ceiling lights and fan. This 5-bladed
ceiling fan comes with five preset
speeds as well as an 8-hour sleep
timer. Meanwhile, the 8W LED light
provides the same brightness as a 60W
conventional incandescent lamp. The
LED light also has a long lifespan, thus
helping to reduce waste.

If your home is your palace, the
Arvio Krone fan should be the regal
centerpiece that commands attention
and admiration. Shaped like the
jeweled crown of the Danish monarchy,
the fan is powered by a 6-speed DC
motor, adding not only grandeur to
every room, but also cooling power.

If you and your loved ones constantly
suffer from colds and allergies, the Sharp
Plasmacluster ceiling fan is ideal. The fan
releases plasma ions that will easily get rid of
allergens, bacteria, and viruses, leaving your
home a safe haven from illnesses and disease,
while keeping you cool at the same time.
Available from Sharp.
Standing fans
Standing fans are also called tower fans. They
oscillate like normal fans, but have higher
air circulation coverage due to the 90 degree
angle of their oscillation, as well as the height
of the unit itself. The impeller blades of the
fan move up and down instead of horizontally
like the propellers of ceiling fans. For optimum
efficiency, the impellers are always nearly as
tall as the fan unit itself.
F A C T
By discharging plasma, positive
and negative ions are created
that will break down mold,
bacteria, and viruses. They do
this by transforming into OH
radicals, which steal hydrogen
(H) from the viruses. The OH
radicals then become water,
which returns into the air,
causing the air to be refreshed
and disinfected.
• Traditional standing fans are prone
to overheating due to the vertical
design of the casing. Place them
in clean, dry places for the best
performance and safety.

Quiet, sleek, and powerful, Dyson’s Air Multiplier
Tower Fan is a technological marvel. These
bladeless fans operate on 40% less power.
The AM07 is engineered to reduce turbulence
throughout the machine, streamlining the
pathway for air to pass through the machine with
greater efficiency. Functioning without blades,
the fan is extremely safe for use around small
children, so you’ll have nothing to worry about.

FUN FAN MYTHS!
1. The Mythbusters series on
the Discovery Channel has
debunked a few urban myths
regarding fans:
a) Regular house fans can cause
serious injury – House fans do
not have the required power
to inflict serious wounds in
adults and children, even while
spinning at top speed.
b) Industrial fans can cause
decapitation – Industrial fans
might be able to cause severe
lacerations if impeded from
below, and lethal arterial
severing if you jump directly
forward onto the blades.
However, they are still not able
to decapitate anyone.
2. Fan death is a misconception
in Korean culture. As the story
goes, running an electric fan
in a closed room can lead to
fatal situations. This is merely
a misconception caused by
several conspiracy theories, but
the most plausible explanation
would be hyperthermia.
Hyperthermia is caused by
blown air being warmer
than the body’s temperature,
increasing heat stress on the
body and speeding the rate of
heat exhaustion, which can lead
to death.

These function like standing fans, but they are
shorter so as to fit right on your desk. They are
used for tight spaces, or by those of us that
need to stay absolutely cool while you are hard
at work. They are ubiquitous, and you can find
them in all sorts of sizes too!

The words sleek and retro might not fit in the
same sentence, but when used to describe

convey a sense of sophistication and simplicity,
reminding us of a bygone age where things
were a little shinier and sturdier.

Compact in design, the M series stand fan
fits into tight corners to provide refreshing air
circulation where it is needed most. They are
designed to be sleek, and pack a punch with
strong and even air distribution. The fan can be
tilted to any angle to ensure effective cooling
no matter where you’re seated.
