Solid Waste Management: Option for Food Security, Energy & Climate Change Mitigation

  1. 1. 2019/08/12 1 “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” NORTH RIFT-RCE PROJECT PRESENTED BY:DAVID NGIGE MUGURO DAJOPEN WASTE MANAGEMENT(KENYA) “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” Solid Waste Management: Option for Food Security, Energy & Climate Change Mitigation “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” INTRODUCTION. • Dajopen Waste Management was started to address the Socio- Economic, Environmental conditions of the vulnerable communities of the Slums, the Youth & Women , while addressing the plight of small scale farmers through making of organic fertilizer and other recycled products from waste. • With the support from Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” TRAINING/PROCESSES Training the Youth & Women Casing the organic fertilizers “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” THE RESULTS OF RECYCLING WITH NETFUND SUPPORT Garbage Enzymes deprived from Fruit peels Organic Fertilizer
  2. 2. 2019/08/12 2 “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” BRIQUETTES AS AN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY In KALRO Lab doing research for making Calcium Ethonate briquettes Briquettes ready for cooking “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” BENEFITS/IMPACT • Through BEACON empowerment, we were able to have more farmers to use organic fertilizer which has led to increased soil fertility and high crop yields and high water retention which assist the crop to withstand rain shortage and root aeration due to the organic Bio-mass(carbon). • The project focuses on the environmental, social economic challenges to the community especially from the slum areas using collected garbage for economic purposes and in process reduce solid waste streams that breed toxic material and pathogenic organisms into dumpsites and land fills thereby contaminating land and surface water. “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” A CASE STUDY OUR ACTIVITIES HAS LED TO MORE FARMERS EMBRESSING USE OF ORGANIC FERTILIZER IN PRODUCING HIGH YIELDS FROM DIFFERENT CROPS SUCH AS THE BANANA PLANTATION ABOVE “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” AN INTERN WITH SLUM WOMEN USING ORGANIC FERTILIZER “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE PROJECT • The project cleans and conserves the environment, while it keeps the Estates and other areas habitable as per HIC policy. This will ensure our homes are free from diseases like malaria, typhoid and cholera which are caused by the mosquitoes, flies and rodent in the garbage heaps. • It corrects the soil acidity, whereby 5grams of organic fertilizer has scientifically proven of having 6 billion microbial lives, thus enables the soil to release nutrients which increases the crop yield. Besides high crop yield, it also assists the crop to withstand abiotic and biotic factors, while changing the soil from disease inducing to disease suppressing soil “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION Training the youth how to transfer the seedlings from the nursery to the sockets, by using A dibbler. The trees aids in mitigating the climate, while sinking the carbon from the atmosphere.
  3. 3. 2019/08/12 3 “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” TREE PLANTING It is carried out by the community and especially women in a riparian areas, to conserve ecosystem while mitigating climate “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” METAL WASTE From the Urban and Slums’ waste, we collect assorted metal waste. A good example is a simple hand Maize Sheller above, has enabled small scale farmers to shell high quality maize kernel for storage. “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” I invite you to join me to increase farm productivity through the use of Lets go natural together and make this a reality!! “Accelerating Progress Towards The Achievement Of Sustainable Development Goals In Africa” QUESTION?
