Issue/Challenge: Conserving local Koala populations in the Hawkesbury and Blue
Mountains areas through research, education and community awareness.
RCE Educational Strategy and Response: Cross Sector collaboration by NSW Government
(Office of Environment and Heritage) with various key agencies including Science for
Wildlife and Brewongle Environmental Education Centre to deliver education to school
children and run a local ’Koala Festival’ to raise community awareness of the need for
protecting and reducing threats to local koala populations.
SDG’s and Targets
Target 4.7: By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable
development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles,
human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of
cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.
Target 11.4 Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage
Target 15.5 Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of
biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species
