Presentation: Ahmad Muktar RCE Zaria, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
  3. 3. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria INTRODUCTION  Zaria It is located 11.11 latitude and 7.72 longitude  Zaria is one of the major cities in Kaduna State in Northern Nigeria.  Zaria covers approximately 563Km2 land area.
  4. 4. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria INTRODUCTION  Settlement predates the rise of Zazzau as the region, had a history of sedentary Hausa settlement, with institutional but pre-capitalist market exchange and farming.  It has a population of over 1 million, most of whom engage in informal economic activities.  Zaria region host over 13 major tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
  5. 5. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria RATIONALE FOR THE PROJECT  Like many other third world cities, Zaria inclusive has been observed to be losing most of its fertile land including some important species of vegetation and animals to urbanization.  Out of over 200 endangered species published by National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology Ibadan Nigeria, 11 species are found within the region.  The community members, leaders and government have little knowledge on tracking the phenomenon which threatens the attainment of the SDG’s.
  6. 6. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria • The project seeks to directly address the SDG Goal 2, Goal 13 and Goal 15 and indirectly addressing Goal 11 RATIONALE FOR THE PROJECT Cont.
  7. 7. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria NEED FOR THE PROJECT  Urban Spatial footprints is amongst the major threats to vegetation and animal species.  Data on Zaria region and most cities in Nigeria are not readily available.  Data on threatened and endangered species are either missing, inaccessible or in formats that are not easily understood by local communities.  Community lacks information on the current status and future trends
  8. 8. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria  There is need to engage communities and youths to provide data on endangers species within their immediate environment. • The absence of these information makes it difficulty to have a policy guide towards conservation of endangered species and also convince communities to have a change of attitude towards the identified species. NEED FOR THE PROJECT cont.
  9. 9. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria How do we enhance the understanding of ecosystem (vegetation) Change amongst communities in RCE Zaria Region?

Existing Built-up & Vegetation (2017) Existing Built-up & Vegetation Decrease (1976-2017) Built up Vegetation Built up Vegetation 1976 Vegetation 2017  Rapid urbanization has been reducing the vegetation cover of Zaria urban area at an average rate of 3.8% annually.  If the phenomenon is not properly managed, it has the potential of increasing to almost 4.3%.

  14. 14. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria  It is important to mobilize youth within the community to identify and tag the location of these species. LESSONS
  15. 15. Enhancing the Understanding of Ecosystem (vegetation) Change Detection Amongst Communities in Greater RCE Zaria Region Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria LESSONS  The method used in determining the changes within biodiversity has proven to be cost effective and provides for real-time monitoring of changes within the environment  The project could also be extended to other RCE’s.  The integration of GPS has made it possible to monitor the behavior of species at a wider scale.
