Wound and Healing
A wound is a serious injury, especially a deep cut
through the skin
• An injury to living tissue caused by a cut or tear
in the skin or flesh, blow, or other impact,
typically one in which the skin is cut or broken.
Healing
• body’s response to injury to restore normal
structure and function
Biomaterials play an integral role in medicine
today, restoring function and facilitating healing
for people after injury or disease.
CLASSIFICATION OF WOUNDS
Acute or Tidy wounds
clean and incised, inflicted by sharp instruments,
seldom tissue loss occur
closed primarily without complications with
primary healing
Examples: surgical incisions, cuts from glass and
knife
• Heal normally in a very orderly & efficient
manner
• Progress through normal stages of wound
healing such as inflammation, proliferation
and remodeling
• show definite signs of healing within 2–4 weeks

from crushing, tearing, avulsion, vascular
injury or burns

environment to keep out pathogens & to
promote wound healing process
• Fiber mats and hydrogels

anti-bacterial properties.
Stages of Healing
Wound healing is a complex dynamic process
The process of healing involves 2 distinct processes:
A. REGENERATION
Is when healing takes place by proliferation of
parenchymal cells and usually results in complete
restoration of the original tissues.
B. REPAIR
It is a healing outcome in which tissues do not return to
their normal architecture and function. Repair typically
results in the formation of scar tissue.

wound infection remain
challenging clinical problems.
• Some traditional medicines
believed to contain bioactive
small molecules that induce the
healing of chronic wounds by
reducing excessive
inflammation.
• Contact lens: silicon hydrogel
• Dental implants: Titanium
• Heart valve: carbon and
titanium
• Hip and knee replacement:
ceramic, metal and plastic.

FIBER MATS
Conventional wound dressings were
originally made from cotton gauze or
non-woven blends of similar materials.
• Poly caprolactone
• (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester
• collagen
• A protein found in connective tissue,
skin, tendon, bone, and cartilage
• Incorporation of known antibacterial
compounds
including silver and gentamicin are an
added feature
SCAFFOLDS
• Fibronectin is a protein found within the dermis, has been used to
make scaffolds for potential wound healing therapies
• Accelerates the process of wound healing
• Improve the structural remodeling

Good candidates for wound
dressings, can form a barrier
from pathogens as well as
create a hydrated
environment to help promote
the body’s own wound healing
response.

fabrication of hydrogels.
o Frequently used in wound
healing applications.
Chitosan & PVA Hydrogel
Hydrogels and nanocarriers for tailored bioactive molecules
Injectable hydrogels received increased attention in the fields of wound
healing and tissue engineering because of mimic mechanical, swelling
and shrinking properties of native tissues
used for wounds of any size, shape, or depth
form three-dimensional water-containing polymer network via
physical or chemical cross-linking.
(Dong & Wang, 2016), (Milcovich et al., 2017)
Conclusion
Therapies that are currently available to patients for the treatment of wounds and
burns that incorporate a biomaterial component.
These therapies range from polymer hydrogels to epidermal/dermal substitutes.
Due to the heterogeneous nature of wounds, there is no “one fits all” therapy,
though the continual advancement in technologies used to develop these therapies.
he recent advances in the use of biomaterials for wound healing therapies, and
their future direction replaced conventional processes
Ideally, advanced wound dressings provide enhanced healing and bridge the gaps
in the healing processes
They are more advent, efficient and less expensive towards economic

Wound and Healing A wound is a serious injury, especially a deep cut through the skin • An injury to living tissue caused by a cut or tear in the skin or flesh, blow, or other impact, typically one in which the skin is cut or broken. Healing • body’s response to injury to restore normal structure and function Biomaterials play an integral role in medicine today, restoring function and facilitating healing for people after injury or disease.

CLASSIFICATION OF WOUNDS Acute or Tidy wounds clean and incised, inflicted by sharp instruments, seldom tissue loss occur closed primarily without complications with primary healing Examples: surgical incisions, cuts from glass and knife • Heal normally in a very orderly & efficient manner • Progress through normal stages of wound healing such as inflammation, proliferation and remodeling • show definite signs of healing within 2–4 weeks

  • 8. Stages of Healing Wound healing is a complex dynamic process The process of healing involves 2 distinct processes: A. REGENERATION Is when healing takes place by proliferation of parenchymal cells and usually results in complete restoration of the original tissues. B. REPAIR It is a healing outcome in which tissues do not return to their normal architecture and function. Repair typically results in the formation of scar tissue.

Biomaterials • Chronic, non-healing wounds affects the quality of life • the management of chronic wounds, burns, and skin wound infection remain challenging clinical problems. • Some traditional medicines believed to contain bioactive small molecules that induce the healing of chronic wounds by reducing excessive inflammation. • Contact lens: silicon hydrogel • Dental implants: Titanium • Heart valve: carbon and titanium • Hip and knee replacement: ceramic, metal and plastic. • Stents: silicon (Moses et al., 2023)

Hydrogels and nanocarriers for tailored bioactive molecules Injectable hydrogels received increased attention in the fields of wound healing and tissue engineering because of mimic mechanical, swelling and shrinking properties of native tissues used for wounds of any size, shape, or depth form three-dimensional water-containing polymer network via physical or chemical cross-linking. (Dong & Wang, 2016), (Milcovich et al., 2017)

Conclusion Therapies that are currently available to patients for the treatment of wounds and burns that incorporate a biomaterial component. These therapies range from polymer hydrogels to epidermal/dermal substitutes. Due to the heterogeneous nature of wounds, there is no “one fits all” therapy, though the continual advancement in technologies used to develop these therapies. he recent advances in the use of biomaterials for wound healing therapies, and their future direction replaced conventional processes Ideally, advanced wound dressings provide enhanced healing and bridge the gaps in the healing processes They are more advent, efficient and less expensive towards economic
