  2. 2. Compound Finals uɑ、uo、uɑi、uei、üe
  3. 3. • Like i, when the initial vowel u is followed by the main vowel, u is a transitional sound. uā uá uǎ uà• If there are vowels or nasal consonants after the main vowels, they should be unstressed as well. uāi uái uǎi uài
  4. 4. huā 花(flower)
  5. 5. shuō 说(say, spaek)
  6. 6. kuài 快(fast)
  7. 7. • In pinyin orthography some vowels are omitted for the sake of brevity, thus uei become ui.
  8. 8. duì (=duèi) 对(correct)
  9. 9. • If there is no initial consonant before u, u is written as a semi- vowel w. thus uɑ, uo, uɑi, become wɑ, wo, wɑi, wei
  10. 10. wà 袜(sock)
  11. 11. wǒ 我(I/me)
  12. 12. wài 外(outside)
  13. 13. wèi 胃(stomach)
  14. 14. • In üe, e is main vowel, ü is a transitional sound which is not stressed.• If there is no initial consonant before üe, add a y and drop the umlaut. thus üe becomes yue.
  15. 15. yuè 月(moon)
  16. 16. • When j, q, and x are combined with ü, the umlaut is omitted and the ü appears as u.
