Shown is the apparatus used for counting alpha particles. Rutherford discovered the alpha, beta and gamma rays of radiation. In 1907, he began working with Geiger, extending his study of alpha particles. They worked on a radiation detector invented by and named after Geiger, and developed the scintillation screen for observing alpha particles. http://www.ssplprints.com/image.php?id=87284 Rutherford (right) speaking to John Radcliffe in the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1935 http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/C/Cavendish_Laboratory.html April 14, 1932: Zounds! Wall Info Photos World Class Discoveries WORLD CLASS DISCOVERIES RADIOACTIVE DECAY Early on he studied radioactive atoms and determined that two different emissions, named alpha and beta rays, emanate from radioactive atoms. Later he teamed with Frederick Soddy to demonstrate that radioactive elements would spontaneously turn into another atom. They defined the concept of isotopes. Was thought to have uttered “they’ll think we’re alchemists!” GOLD FOIL EXPERIMENT: He bombarded a thin piece of gold foil with positive alpha particles and observed the path of the particles as they either passed through the foil or deflected back from the foil. 1 / 8000 particles bounced back and 7999/8000 passed through. From the deflection he concluded the atom had a small, dense, positive center and from the passing through he concluded the atom was mostly empty space. http://www.asdk12.org/staff/vanarsdale_mark/pages/biology/Chemistry_Images/GoldFoilExperiment.jpg NUCLEAR REACTIONS: “ Radioactive decay had shown that some atoms spontaneously split, but Rutherford "detected the transmutation of one elementary material, nitrogen, into another, oxygen, when the nitrogen atom was bombarded by the natural alpha articles of radium." He used alpha particles to eject protons from materials containing hydrogen when he found the same thing happened in nitrogen (which doesn't contain hydrogen). But more importantly the proton came out at higher energy than it could have received by collision. Effectively Rutherford had "broken up" or split the atom. He was the first to create a “nuclear reaction.” “ http:// www.polymernotes.org/biographies/NZL_bio_rutherford.htm WATCH ME http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzALbzTdnc8
