Where are we now? <ul><li>We are ½ way done with the Census </li></ul><ul><li>The voluntary mail participation phase is over and provides the starting line for our operations </li></ul><ul><li>We have recruited thousands of partners and tens of thousands of applicants for jobs </li></ul><ul><li>We have hired for our field operations which will continue through September </li></ul><ul><li>Our peak operation starts in May - NRFU </li></ul>
  3. 4. Nonresponse Followup ( May 1, 2010 to July 10, 2010) <ul><li>We identify the housing units on our list for which we do not have a questionnaire. These addresses are the “universe” for the Non-response Follow-up (NRFU) Operation. </li></ul><ul><li>Census workers (enumerators) then visit every address, for which no response was received, and conduct interviews using a paper questionnaire. </li></ul><ul><li>At each address, the Census worker determines the Census Day status (April 1, 2010) of the unit (occupied, vacant, or delete) and completes the questionnaire with the appropriate information. </li></ul><ul><li>We will complete the operation and have a questionnaire from every household as required by law. 100% response rate. </li></ul>

What does the Census worker do? <ul><li>Census workers are trained to go into the communities, knocking on those doors who have not returned the questionnaire. </li></ul><ul><li>They are trained to reach out to the household six times and to leave note cards whenever they visit. </li></ul><ul><li>The note cards inform the resident that a census worker will return to that home. The card has a number to call to set up an appointment. </li></ul><ul><li>If after seven attempts, we cannot find the person or the household still refuses, the worker will attempt to get the information from a knowledgeable source (i.e. the neighbor.) </li></ul>

  6. 7. <ul><li>Census workers will come to the door and will carry badges identifying them as Census Bureau employees </li></ul><ul><li>Census workers will NEVER ask for social security numbers, bank account information, immigration status, donations, credit card numbers or fees. </li></ul><ul><li>Census workers will not ask to come in and may do the interview on the doorstep. </li></ul><ul><li>Most Census workers will have the distinctive black canvass bag with our logo. </li></ul><ul><li>Census workers will provide (upon request) a phone number to call to verify their identity. </li></ul><ul><li>Everyone may call 1-800-563-6499 to verify a census worker’s identity. </li></ul><ul><li>Anyone who suspects a scam should call the police. </li></ul>How do I know it is a Real Census taker?
  7. 8. When is the Census Over? <ul><li>Recruiting & Hiring </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Recruiting is very limited right now (866-861-2010). Hiring is taking place right now through the end of May (very limited thereafter) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Knocking on doors </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This is the major operation from now until mid July. Quality assurance and verification operations will continue sporadically through October. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Local Census Offices </li></ul><ul><ul><li>They will all be closed between September and October. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Data </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Data goes to the President on December 31. More detailed information will be delivered to our communities immodestly thereafter and most of the data will be released by March 2011. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Census Bureau </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The Bureau continues to do data collection year round every year for a variety of surveys such as the American Community Survey and produces yearly data products for all communities. </li></ul></ul>
