Syntropy
Greek syn (together) and tropos (tendency)
A deep, unifying, self-organizing force that is omnipresent in the universe, bringing a tendency towards energy concentration, order, organization and life, in contrast to entropy.

Guy Dauncey is a futurist who works to develop a positive vision of a sustainable future, and to translate that vision into action. He lives on Vancouver Island, in Canada.

He is founder of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, co-founder of the Victoria Car Share Cooperative, and the author or co-author of ten books, including The Climate Challenge: 101 Solutions to Global Warming and most recently Journey to the Future: A Better World Is Possible.

He is an Honorary Member of the Planning Institute of BC, a Fellow of the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland, and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts, founded in Britain in 1754.

His websites are www.earthfuture.com, www.journeytothefuture.ca and www.thepracticalutopian.ca.

Syntropy - A New Story

  2. 2. A silent slide show such as this can not begin do justice to such a huge and important topic. In Journey to the Future: A Better World is Possible, set in the year 2032, the final chapter involves a dinner party where two guests, a physicist and a biologist, answer the question that is on so many people’s minds: “What is syntropy?”
  3. 3. This slide show is not a representation of that dinner party. It is, rather, the way I explain syntropy when giving a presentation. If you are downloading, the transitions sometimes get lost, so you might need to reset it for a 1 second fade between each slide. And my thanks to so many artists and photographers whose work I have used. - Guy Dauncey

  33. 33. “I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness. “ Max Planck, 1858-1947

  47. 47. “I have no doubts about the date when I discovered the law of syntropy. It was in the days just before Christmas 1941, when, as a consequence of conversations with two colleagues, a physicist and a biologist, I was suddenly projected in a new panorama, which radically changed the vision of science and of the Universe which I had inherited from my teachers, and which I had always considered the strong and certain ground on which to base my scientific investigations. As Luigi Fantappiè explains it…
  48. 48. “Suddenly I saw the possibility of interpreting a wide range of solutions (the anticipated potentials) of the wave equation which can be considered the fundamental law of the Universe. These solutions had been always rejected as ‘impossible’, but suddenly they appeared ‘possible’, and they explained a new category of phenomena which I later named ‘syntropic’, totally different from the entropic ones, of the mechanical, physical and chemical laws, which obey only the principle of classical causation and the law of entropy.” - Luigi Fantappiè As Luigi Fantappiè explains it…
  49. 49. Syntropy Greek syn (together) and tropos (tendency) A deep, unifying, self-organizing force that is omnipresent in the universe, bringing a tendency towards energy concentration, order, organization and life, in contrast to entropy.
  50. 50. In October 1942 Fantappiè presented his theory of syntropy to the Accademia d'Italia. His finding were that syntropic phenomena invert the second law of thermodynamics. •A reduction in entropy and an increase in differentiation is observed •Converging waves attract in smaller places energy and matter •Concentration of matter and energy cannot be indefinite and entropic processes are needed to compensate syntropic concentration •In nature, syntropy and entropy interact constantly •Scientific finalism, final causes, are introduced •A new scientific methodology is needed since the experimental method can only study causes located in the past. The Unified Theory of the Physical and Biological World
  51. 51. “What makes life different is the presence of syntropic qualities: finalities, goals, and attractors. As we consider causality the essence of the entropic world, it is natural to consider finality the essence of the syntropic world. It is therefore possible to say that the essence of life is final causes, syntropy. Living means tending to attractors ... the law of life is not the law of mechanical causes; this is the law of non-life, the law of death, the law of entropy; the law which dominates life is the law of finalities, the law of syntropy.” - Fantappiè The Unified Theory of the Physical and Biological World

  59. 59. All consciousness is permeated with syntropy, drawing it towards order, complexity and life
  60. 60. The 1st Law of Syntropy “Acting through consciousness, syntropy motivates individual units of being to self-organize cooperatively within their empathic reach to achieve greater organizational power, range, competence, integrity and freedom for their common good.” from Journey to the Future
  61. 61. The 2nd Law of Syntropy “In the long run, due to the deep fundamental unity of the Universe, any unit of being that extends its empathy beyond its familiar reach will discover affinity with other units of being. Over time, the syntropic impulse will result in ever-widening circles of empathy, until they embrace the entire Universe.” from Journey to the Future
