Today, we’re pleased to announce that the paths of these two industry-transforming developments have come together. They now represent a single path on the journey towards an enhanced user experience and expanded industry growth. Because today, 22nm goes mainstream….
Good morning/afternoon. A little more than one year ago today, Intel announced a revolutionary breakthrough in transistor design called 3D or Tri-gate transistors. A breakthrough that has allowed us to advance Moore’s Law right on schedule and begin volume manufacturing of 22nm-based microprocessors offering greater performance at lower power than any microprocessor that has come before.
… with the introduction of the 3rd Generation Intel Core Processor Family, including 5 SKUs designed especially for Ultrabook and aimed squarely at the center of the mainstream computing market. So today’s a big day for Intel and the industry, as well as for consumers and businesses worldwide. But before we dive into the extraordinary attributes and capabilities of 3rd Gen Core Ultrabooks, let’s take a minute to look at how we got here.
As you saw in the video, the campaign has already been rolled out in a number of countries, extending across the entire spectrum of both traditional and new media. We want the world to know that Ultrabook is truly something special. And that we are just at the beginning of this new era.Of course, new eras don’t usually just happen on their own; there’s always some kind of driving force behind the transformation. And behind this new era is an unprecedented coming-together of the industry-wide ecosystem to create an entirely new product category in less than twelve months – something that required an incredible degree of effort, cooperation and innovation.
But in the New Era of Computing, there’s much more to creating a compelling user experience than just the form factor itself. In fact, extensive work done by Intel’s Insights and market research team shows there are four key “vectors” or “pillars” of experience that are absolutely essential to a great, satisfying experience. And while we can debate about the exact words we might use to best describe these vectors, there’s really no question as to what they mean:First and foremost, user’s want responsiveness from their experience. They don’t want to wait for the device to start up. They don’t want to wait for their favorite app to load. They don’t want to wait for an HD video to render. They don’t want to wait. Period.Second, they expect the experience to be highly mobile. Somewhat surprisingly, the essence of this expectation is not so much about wanting to take the device with them everywhere they go; it’s about having constant access to an uncompromised, undiminished experience. Being able to do anything they would do at home - no matter where they are.Third, users expect their computing experience to be stylish and personal. They want it to be easily customized for their own specific needs, wants and circumstances. And that includes the look, design and style of the device itself. And finally, the experience must be safe and protected. How many times have you heard someone say, “My whole life is on my computer?” Or maybe you’ve even said it yourself. No wonder keenly aware of the need for strong and consistent security. Now, as I look at these four vectors or pillars, as different as they are, they all have one thing in common. They’re all moving targets. What’s considered responsive today, won’t be considered responsive enough tomorrow. Same for the concepts of mobility, personal and protected.Fortunately, we have some experience in hitting a moving target….
It’s called Moore’s Law. And for forty years, we’ve been pushing it forward by taking aim at technology capabilities that don’t even exist at the time we begin working on them. Now in the Age of “Experience,” some might make the argument that users don’t care about the underlying technology that makes each new generation of microprocessors possible. And they’d be right. Users don’t care. But that doesn’t mean it’s not absolutely essential.
As I mentioned, it was Intel’s invention of the tri-gate transistor that allowed us to develop a process for manufacturing 22nm at high volume . This breakthrough – much like our previous breakthroughs including Strained Silicon in 2003 and High-k/Metal Gate in 2007 -- not only extends Moore’s Law, but extends our lead over our nearest competitors by years. And as proud of these breakthroughs as we may be, we recognize that a user looking for the best possible computing experience, doesn’t need to know what a Tri-Gate transistor is to instantly appreciate the difference in the experience offered by a pencil-thin 3rd Generation Core-based Ultrabook and a seven pound, five-year-old notebook.
So Moore’s Law remains as important as ever, but its benefits related to user experience might also be expressed as The Law of More. To explain what I mean, let’s looks at couple of key areas where 3rd Generation Core will give the user more of what we know they want.
We know people expect each new generation of every device they use to be more responsive than the last – which is exactly why performance still matters. And Ultrabooks based on 3rd Gen Core deliver.3rd Gen core delivers up to 22% more performance over the prior generation, resulting in an even more seamless, uninterrupted experience. And we’ve improved the graphics performance by up to 2X. As a result, you’ll get amazing mainstream gaming and can prep video for your iPhone in less than half the time required by a system based on 2nd Gen Core. And if you’re replacing a 3-year old laptop, the improvement in experience will be even more significant: up to 80% better performance. And up to 19X better graphics performance.Or to put it another way, if you dig out a video that took you an hour to encode for your iPod or smart phone back in 2009, and do the same thing with one of the Ultrabooks here on stage today, it will take you approximately two minutes. Notes on processor comparisons: 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ Processor:(i5-3472U, 3MB cache, up to 2.8GHz, 2C/4T, Intel® HD Graphics 4000)2nd Gen Intel® Core™ Processor: (i5-32557M , 3MB cache,1.7 up to 2.7GHz, 2C/4T, Intel® HD Graphics 3000)Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor: (P8600, 3MB cache, 2.4GHz, 2C/2T, Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD)
Of course, the benefits of 22nm and 3rd Generation Intel Core processors are not reserved exclusively for Ultrabook. In fact, we announced 3rd generation Quad Core processors along with Intel 7 Series Chipsets, and our updated Intel® Centrino Wireless portfolio in late April and we more recently announced 3rd gen Core™ for our vPro Platform in May.So let’s take a quick look at some of the features and improvements 3rd Gen Core provides…
