http://PatentsView.org USPTO launches PatentsView, a patent data visualization tool, which helps patent researcher mine 40 years of data. We have been using the tool from the day of its launch and spotted some hits and misses of the same that we have presented here for our viewers.

3. The new tool brings many advantages like
elimination of wasteful cleaning of data and viewing
large data from different perspectives.

Top Inventors and top
classes are just a click
away.

7. Results for "Google" as an assignee.

8. You can sorts results based on "USPC Classes" without efforts.

9. Different data sorting options are a boon as
manual searching is time-consuming.

It provides deep analysis
of an assignee.

11. When we selected Assignee from the tab beneath
the header, we were presented with a screen
showing relevant details to the searched term, like:
-
Top three most cited patents,
Top three most mentioned UPSC classes,
Top three inventors,
Innovation timeline of Google (searched
term)

13. The tool provides kind of information in a
matter of seconds for which other tools take
several hours.

It provides data-driven
interesting insight.

16. Miss no. 1
Inaccurate Data Disambiguation

17. The PatentsView fails to disambiguate the names of
assignees, location (city/country/state) and inventors.
Though, its algorithm corrects minor mistakes but,
links names together that are within a certain bound
of similarity

18. Searching for patents from a specific inventor is a
pain in the neck if his name is quite common or has
multiple forms.

19. Miss no. 2
Searching is Ambiguous and
Undefined

20. We searched for "International Business Machine" in
Assignee, but the results were unexpected.
The search yielded no results even if we searched
again with "International Business Machine"
(with inverted commas)

21. We then searched with "International_Business_Machine"
(underscores). Then PatentsView returned 89,157 patents that
was almost accurate .

22. Well, USPTO of late noticed and fixed this
bug.

23. Miss no. 3
The Map View Can Bewilder You

24. Switching from the list to map view provides
geographical details of patent filings.

25. As, to represent 89000+ patents, there were not enough
dots on the map, it may confuse users.

26. More dots appear on the map as you micro zoom, but these
are still not enough to show all of the patents.

27. To find out the exact patent count of an area, you have
to hover your mouse over the dots which is not a good
idea if you are short on time.

28. At present, PatentsView is its beta stage and USPTO is
working great to make it perfect. No doubt, PatentsView
has made patent searching easy as pie.
