  2. 2. INDEX  What is “to spank”?  Spank at home.  Spank at schools.  Where spanking is legal and illegal.  Arguments against spanking.  Arguments in favour of spanking.  Summary.  Questions.
  3. 3. WHAT IS “TO SPANK”?  Form of corporal punishment .  Involves an adult.  Open hand or implement.  Physical injury.  Boys have tended to be more spanked than girls.  Some countries have outlawed the spanking but many allow it.
  4. 4. SPANK AT HOME.  The acceptability and effectiveness of spanking vary.  Many scientific researchers and child welfare organizations oppose it.  It does not benefit the child.  “It's not just that children who are more aggressive are more likely to be spanked."
  5. 5. SPANK AT SCHOOLS.  Usually delivered with an implement .  These prohibitions have been controversial.  In some cultures it is referred to as "caning" and not "spanking".  Cruel and unusual punishment.  School corporal punishment have to be "reasonable and

  7. 7. LEGAL AND ILLEGAL.  EUROPE  Green: Corporal  punishment prohibited  in schools and the  home.  Blue: Corporal  punishment prohibited  in schools only. Red: Corporal  punishment not  prohibited.

AGAINST SPANKING.  It is ineffective.  It may activate criminal, anti-social, violent, aggressive behavior later in life.  It has been linked to many adult problems.  It can escalate to abuse.  It can unintentionally cause serious physical damage.  It trains a child to use violence.  Spanking creates fear in the child.
  9. 9. IN FAVOR OF SPANKING.  Spanking is NOT abuse.  Three punishments depending on the severity of the crime.  The third and final punishment was a spanking.  The easiest, least traumatic and quick for her was the spanking.  Before, she suffered an
