Frontier Silicon Limited is to produce a new module named 'Venice 6' that will
be the first to integrate Wi-Fi, DAB and FM radio reception with an on-board
wi-fi antenna. It will enable consumers to access analogue and digital radio, as
well as internet radio stations, podcasts and on-demand content, plus their
own MP3 music collection, all from a single piece of hardware.
Equipment using the new module is expected to be available in shops by July
2007. The chip supports the MP2 codec used for DAB in the UK, as well as the
AAC+ codec used elsewhere, and it can receive DAB broadcasts in both Band
III and L-band.
Steve Evans, Frontier Silicon VP of digital audio, explained: “Audio
manufacturers want to build products that can be used and sold anywhere in
the world. With the fragmentation of broadcast radio standards, this has been
a difficult goal to achieve – until Frontier introduced the Venice 6 module. By
bringing wi-fi radio, music streaming, DAB and FM together into one compact
and cost effective module, Venice 6 makes global audio products a reality.
DAB v2 [using the AAC+ codec] is attracting significant interest from
broadcasters outside of the UK, so it makes sense for us to include this
capability to allow manufacturers to easily address this part of the market with
Venice 6.”
