There were three crosses erected on a hill outside of Jerusalem. On the center cross hung Jesus Christ, who was crucified for claiming to be the Son of God. To his left and right were two thieves who were being punished for their crimes. Jesus' crucifixion is the central event in Christianity, representing his sacrifice to redeem humankind from their sins.
