2. 2.

We thought, “Oh great a bunch of crying complainers”.

Perhaps Yelp is a place to go so that people can inform other people of their experiences at certain restaurants, hotels, etc.

Maybe Yelp is one big blog where people have alias names and can say whatever and never have to worry about people finding out who they are.

Neither of us are a participation on Yelp so our views on this community were more on the negative side going into it.

 3. 3.

Before entering the community we checked out other people’s reviews and profiles (we had no idea you could upload your picture and include “abut me information”).

We created a screen name “Gina city girl S” and started filling out the profile and it was actually pretty fun.

Now came the part for our first review and it was pretty nerve racking. These people seemed like professionals and have followers, and get feedback and we were the new kids on the block

So we gave some feed back on sugar bliss cupcake store and it was fun. What was even better is within ten minutes of adding our review we had someone give a positive comment!!!

 4. 4.

We found this great yelp community blog where the Yelp Elite in Chicago gathered together to munch on some yummy cupcakes, drink some great wine and receive some relaxing manicure and pedicures. www.communityblog.yelp.com

We also found this great article, “SciTechBlog” and captured the screen shot below:

 5. 5.

We believe that this community is one that pairs people who have similar interest in different ways.

Since people comment and leave positive feedback messages on your page it shows that they are interested in the topic that you have posted about that certain restaurant or hotel.

Not only are you making friendships with other people that share common interests with you and connecting with others, you are able to get a good review on a new hip place or learn something new about a place that you already go to . For example we learned that if you refer 3 people to Urban Oasis (a massage place) and they mention your name as the referral, Urban Oasis will send you a $50 off coupon your next visit. Amazing and all thanks to someone’s posting on Yelp.

 6. 6.

We did not come across anything that would tip the scale of power in someone else’s favor, since this is an opinion based community and you are allowed to share openly how you feel about whatever.

We also did not feel that people in our community were insulting or vice versa.

At first glance this social network seems very friendly and welcomes anyone that would like to participate.

We did not feel like there were any privacy issues because if someone responded to your comment you can choose to accept , delete or block that person, which is good then you won’t get any stalkers!!

 7. 7.

We both really felt that we did a lot of observing and how users interacted with each other. We would see how certain users followed each other and gave little kudos on certain reviews that their Yelp friends made.

It was fun to also write our own review because you could really let your personality come out in your writing and people pick up on your humor when they right you back. Also, when we wrote a review and it helped someone that is a great feeling to know that someone is going to benefit off the review that you just gave.
