Cordless Electric Law n Mow er Review Gazebo
Introduction Gazebo Replacement Canopy
Green House
This is a review of the Black and Decker (B&D) CMM1000 5 HP
cordless electric law n mow er w ith a 19-inch cutting path. The Hemp Canopy Tents
mow er has a mulching feature and came w ith a rear-mounted Law n Mow er
grass catcher. The author has used this model for years and Leathermen
offers the follow ing observations and advice to those Shovel
considering the purchase of a cordless electric law n mow er.

Convenience
Greenhouse Gardening
This cordless law n mow er is extremely convenient. There is no Leatherman Squirt
need to purchase any gasoline or oil for the life of the mow er.
Solar Lamp Post
Because gasoline prices are currently so high, this is an extremely cost-effective mow er. The B&D CMM1000

mow er initially costs more than its gasoline-pow ered counterpart. How ever, the elimination of gas and oil

purchases, oil changes, air filter changes, and all the maintenance normally associated w ith small gasoline engines
offsets the initial price.

Electric law n mow ers are much quieter than their gasoline-pow ered counterparts. The noise level drops even Mountain Man on Charge Tti

Say good-bye to back-breaking pull starting. Electric law n mow ers start via a simple sw itch or lever.
Finally, the one-hand external cutting height adjustment lever requires no tools and only minimal hand strength. The
height adjustment has a simple gauge show ing the best height for mulching.
Safety
The mow er comes w ith a safety key that must be inserted before the cordless electric law n mow er w ill start. This
key cannot be inserted until the recharging cord is detached from the back of the electric law n mow er. The mow er
is started by pulling the safety release lever up to the padded handle, and operating the convenient start lever. The
safety release must be held to the handle during mow er operation. If the operator releases his or her grip for any
reason, the cordless electric law n mow er promptly stops.
The cordless electric law n mow er must never be operated in w et grass because it is an electrical appliance. If
there are several days of rain in a row , the ow ner must w ait until the yard has dried sufficiently before using the
electric mow er. This drying often takes at least another full day after the end of the rain.
Battery Life and Charging
The B&D CMM1000 cordless electric law n mow er houses a sealed 24-volt battery inside the entirely plastic casing.
No extension cord is required to operate this mow er.
Anyone w ho has carried a car or boat battery might assume that this unit w ould be difficult to push because of the
large battery. On the contrary, the battery is w ell-balanced betw een the tw o back w heels and the mow er is easy
to maneuver.
The battery trickle-charges via the external pow er supply and uses standard 110 Volt household outlets. The
recharging plug can be difficult to plug into the mow er in dim light or for those w ith limited manual dexterity. A
red/green LED on the mow er indicates that the mow er is charging (red) or fully charged (green).
The instructions for this cordless electric law n mow er indicate that the battery reaches about 70% of its full
charge in 4 hours of charging. Experience has show n that it is better to allow the mow er to fully charge overnight
before using it again.
Engine Horsepow er
The B&D CMM1000 cordless electric law n mow er has a 5 HP battery. This is 5 HP gas equivalent at peak torque. A
gasoline law n mow er w ill operate at full horsepow er until the last drop of gasoline is used. The electric law n
mow er w ill operate at or near full horsepow er for most of the cutting time, and then gradually loses horsepow er
until a recharge is required.
This mow er is rated for a yard of approximately 1/3 acre. Experience has show n that the mow er is much better
suited for 0.25 acre or less, if the ow ner desires to cut the entire yard in a single session. Otherw ise, the mow er
must recharge overnight, and the remainder of the law n must be cut another day.
Battery Operating Time
This cordless electric law n mow er can operate for 40-45 minutes on a full charge at ideal grass conditions. Ideal
grass conditions include dry grass only requiring 1-2 inches to be cut. High grass, damp grass, dried grass clumps
from previous mow ings, and thick grass w ill all decrease the cutting time, because these conditions require more
pow er and drain the battery faster. Cutting the grass very low , a dull blade, and using the mulching feature w ill
also decrease the cutting time.
Those w ishing to purchase this cordless electric law n mow er should invest in the inexpensive external grass
discharge chute. This chute is not included w ith the mow er. The mulching feature cuts the grass clippings
repeatedly, and drains the battery faster. With the external discharge chute, cut grass exits the mow er quickly.
Disadvantages
As stated previously, this cordless electric law n mow er operates at the rated horsepow er for most, but not all, of
the cutting session. Factors such as thicker or higher grass can decrease the amount of cutting time available. The
unit cannot be used w hile the grass is w et. The rating that the cordless law n mow er can cut 1/3 acre on a single
charge is optimistic. This mow er does best cutting 0.20-0.25 acres on a single charge.
Recommendations
The B&D CMM1000 5 HP 19-inch cordless electric law n mow er (or comparable model) is ideal for homeow ners
w ith yards of about 0.25 acres or less, w ho dislike dealing w ith gas and oil, and prefer a quieter law n cutting
experience. The mow er is easy to operate and recharge, although a few ow ners might have difficulty plugging the
recharging cord into the mow er. Note that the model review ed w as purchased several years ago, and this issue
may have been resolved.
If you have a small lot, are tired of keeping flammable gasoline in the garage, and hate pull-starting a law n mow er
(or are unable to), a cordless electric law n mow er is the perfect law n mow er for you.

It depends on the size of your law n. The cordless electric is fine if you have a small enough law n. If you’re yard
is large and you have to recharge several times in order to complete the job then the gas mow er is better, unless
you just have tons of time on your hands.

w orked fine for short w hile then w hile off an acrid smell and black smoke! inside in front of battery is now a melted

That’s unusual, but I suppose, the charger, didn’t turn off automatically and the heat built up and burned out the
w ires, and most likely the charger as w ell.
Trouble is, the cost of repairing almost anything these days, ends up being more than the item is w orth.
I’d do some online shopping, find the price of a new one, and see if it’s w orth trying to repair it.
It’s a shame, it w asn’t an old model, then you w ouldn’t feel so bad about it.
check to see, if they have had any recalls on that model, there could have been some defect in it.
Even w ith the parts, and their cost, there is the labor involved as w ell, and w hether you have the skills to do that
job.
Sometimes w ith these problems, w e have to bite the bullet and buy a new one.

In the right circumstances a cordless w ill w ork fine. No, they’re not as pow erful as gas, and if you have a really
large area to cut, one charge w on’t do it. You can buy extra batteries though they’re not cheap. I have a 24v
cordless and am very happy w ith it. It’s light and easy to push. It’s quiet enough that I can cut the law n w ithout
making the neighbours close their w indow s. I cut about 100′ x100′ on one charge unless the grass is w et or too
long. It cuts over small branches in the law n w ith no trouble. I’d be using a lot of extension cord to reach all the
areas w ith a corded one, and I hate the noise of gas ones, futzing around w ith fuel, and yanking on the cord.

Which w ould you get: a cordless electric mow er or an electric reel mow er?
I’ve been looking at both and most say the same basic things except that the reel ones you can use longer because
of better batteries and because they w ill mow w ithout the pow er too. Has anyone used both? Has anyone used
them on Saint Augustine grass? We have a 4200 square foot yard. I’m looking to take over mow ing duties from my
husband and I w ant something other than a gas mow er. I’m also kind of w ary of the $300 price tag. Can you find
them cheaper?
