Wikimedia historic perspective

  1. 1. Wikimedia in a historic perspective GerardM Serial Wikimedian Serial blogger
  2. 2. History  With the bicicle to the library  Wikipedia mentioned on O’Reilly website  Dutch Wikipedia and fishes  Wiktionary, WiktionaryZ and OmegaWiki  Wikidata and interwiki links  Wikidata and linking the world  The bias in it all
  3. 3. Perspective from a information gatherer  Knowledge is a patchwork; by connecting to what you know the “world” is understood  Schools and libraries provide a framework to gathering information  More data enables the synthesis of more intrecate knowledge  Tools, algorithms are what makes it possible  Wikipedia is encyclopaedic and through sources a stepstone from the basics  At this stage Wikidata on its own does not really help; it needs tools
  4. 4. Perspective from a data provider  There is so much data that is not easily available. − Focus is needed; what is the “user story” for what you do? − Focus is needed; what is it that you can achieve  Who is the audience / who are the audiences? − Does your aim align with what the audience seeks? − Is your user story in line with what you do?
  5. 5. Perspective of Wikipedia  Serial approach; one article at a time (reading and writing)  Lists and categories have a different approach  Disambiguation is something you work at  Structure is accidental, links are implicit
  6. 6. Wikidata perspective  All Wikipedia articles were known from the start  Statements on Wikipedia articles are being added  Lists and categories are based on query and are the same  Statements are explicit  Information is imported from everywhere; first from Wikipedias  Information representing Wikipedia list and categories is from all Wikipedias
  7. 7. Library perspective  People read Wikipedia and that is a good thing  Wikipedia refers to sources and they can be found in libraries  English Wikipedia links to WorldCat and it promotes libraries − WorldCat should be in any language  Wikidata links to VIAF, KP and all other libraries in the world; it could enable more library visits
  8. 8. Science perspective  Bio-medical papers are linked in Wikidata − At this time it is a “stamp collection” − There are no statements to detract from the value of a paper  Links to ORCID mean that other sciences are getting attention  WikiCite aims to allow for links from sources from all Wikipedias
  9. 9. My perspective  Wikidata should be more user friendly − Example Reasonator − Example Petscan − Example Historipedia  Query .. nice for geeks − Package it  It is early days.. think user stories!
  10. 10. My perspective  Wikidata should be more user friendly − Example Reasonator − Example Petscan − Example Historipedia  Query .. nice for geeks − Package it  It is early days.. think user stories!
