Wikidata & dbpedia

  1. 1. WIKIDATA & DBPEDIA A JOINT INTEREST GERARD MEIJSSEN
  2. 2. WHAT IS WIKIDATA The Wikimedia project for structured data It is intended to be practical and to be used Interwiki links & info boxes are primary targets Wikisource, Wikivoyage and Commons are included It is inherently multi lingual. Every language does not cover 50% of all items • All Wikipedia articles COULD have a Wikidata item • Statements are included by hand or by bot • Most items have 1 or less statements • • • • •
  3. 3. ABOUT WIKIDATA • It includes links to many external sources like ORCID and VIAF but not DBpedia … • The most informative statistics are here • An item with many statements is not informative • Reasonator does that job • • • • Wikidata is developed in Germany Its community is nbr 5 in active Wikimedia editors All recognised languages may be supported The community decides on the (continued) existence of properties
  4. 4. REASONATOR • It visualises Wikidata content • • • • • Is completely in Javascript and uses Wikidata API May use its sister database for speed It features language fallback but always shows a label It has informative pop up windows that include images It does have specific formatting and reasoning for specific subclasses (humans locations taxons) • This can be extended … • Provides “left to right” support (think Arabic)
  5. 5. WIKIDATA AND DBPEDIA • There is a need for validation and curation of data • External resources COULD be used for this • Practical applications of Dbpedia technology are welcome (there are preconditions) • Wikidata is NOT an academic resource • When the storage and the curation of data is increasingly handled at Wikidata, Dbpedia could concentrate on the research of the data and best practices
  6. 6. WIKIDATA AND DBPEDIA • There are plenty of opportunities for a Dbpedia approach of Wikidata • Wikidata will start to reach out to external sources and the comparison and curation will happen in both directions • Please do your research and share the results in Wikidata. It is how your data gets used
