Following a specific workflow - mixing managment project, storytelling & game conception techniques and an editorial approach - students will discover the different steps to create an interactive news project as well as the new trends that are emerging.

A course by Gerald Holubowicz An official Medium publication for the project will be created where all assignments will be posted by students whether anonymously or not. (Max 500 words.) This course will prepare students to work in the rapidly-changing environment of online journalism, with a focus on storytelling and interactive tools that allow a better audience engagment. Following a specific workflow - mixing managment project, storytelling & game conception techniques and an editorial approach - students will discover the different steps to create an interactive news project as well as the new trends that are emerging. RECOMMENDED BOOK & EXPERIENCES: TBD (this will be a list of short essays or books and/or experience on the web that students need to read/have before starting the courses). CLASS 1: WELCOME & INTRODUCTION. Welcome to the course An overview of what we will do, what is expected and what is required. Lecture Emerging trends and new opportunities : A look at immersive storytelling projects around the world and how they changed news in the past 10 years. Assignment Blog post 1 : Media consumption review and critic: How do you get the news, what device do you use? Further instructions in class. CLASS 2: SCRIPTING FOR IMMERSIVE NEWS EXPERIENCES, STORY FIRST! Sharing Session Discussion around the previous assignment. A discovered project is shared, questions are raised. Lecture From ideation to structure: a basic workflow to start scripting interactive journalism experiences Group Session Story Sprint - group collaborative session: (2 or 3 groups) find 3 ideas and create a logline for each ideas. Start to develop a storytelling experience. Use the 5W’s to enrich the story and develop themes. Sharing Session Discussion around the previous assignment. A discovered project is shared, questions are raised Lecture Shaping interactive stories: Different kind of interactions lead to different techniques, what it takes to create an interactive story. (interactive story architecture). Group Session Story Sprint - group collaborative session: (2 or 3 groups) Quick prototyping exercice from concept to interactive story in 60 minutes. Using the presented tool (twine) start refining your story. Assignment Blog post 4: Find a disruptive technique/technology/tactic to tell a story, identify it and share how it could be applied to journalism and/or news gathering. CLASS 5: PLAYING WITH NEWS Sharing Session Discussion around the previous assignment. A discovered project is shared, questions are raised. Lecture The gamification process: understanding the value of play to get people involved. Group Session Story Sprint - group collaborative session: (2 or 3 groups) Team work to create simple yet engaging gameplay that could help to engage into the story.` Assignment Blog post 5: Test one of the docu-game mentioned in class and write a review about it. Lecture Interactive Journalism : it’s more and more all about design.The influence of design as a systemic approach on interactive storytelling Group Session Story Sprint - group collaborative session: (2 or 3 groups) Brainstorm around the way to bring the story to life. Use a systemic approach to articulate the different chunk of the story across 3 different platforms. Assignment Blog post 3: Find 2 projects online that have an extensive use of design (Graphic design, Experience Design etc..) and explain the added value of design implementation.

A discovered project is shared, questions are raised. Lecture Shaping participatory stories for news : a glimpse at the best practices. Group Session Story Sprint - group collaborative session: (2 or 3 groups) Team start developing an engaging strategy to make the audience participate/interact with the story developed so far. Assignment Blog Post 7: Everyone need to ask 5 questions to an industry professional (film, TV, advertising, gaming) and discover how they handle feedback and measure the success of their projects CLASS 6: SCRIPTING FOR IMMERSIVE NEWS EXPERIENCES, DESIGNING AN EXPERIENCE Sharing Session Discussion around the previous assignment. A discovered project is shared, questions are raised. Lecture Story Design : Understanding the value of design in an immersive experience. Group Session Story Sprint - group collaborative session: (2 or 3 groups) Quick design and graphic study for the story developed previously using Pinterest to create mood boards and set the base of visual dev. Assignment Blog post 6: Find 2 interesting but opposite projects using design to convey a story. Write your impressions. CLASS 8: THE TOOL BOX FOR INTERACTIVE JOURNALISM Sharing Session Discussion around the previous assignment. A discovered project is shared, questions are raised. Lecture The right tool for the right purpose: Creation, Development, Production & distribution Presentation of Racontr Group Session Using Racontr to create an interactive prototype. Assignment Blog Post 8: Find 3 different tools that allow to create interactive content and/or engaging experiences, test them and explain why they should be used in a streamlined production. A discovered project is shared, questions are raised. Metting with: Understanding the potential added value of integrating data within storytelling. A group discussion with a professional who creates data driven stories. (methodology & outcomes) test them and explain why they should be used in a streamlined production. CLASS 10: PRODUCING IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE - PLANNING, BUDGET, EXECUTION. Sharing Session Discussion around the previous assignment. A discovered project is shared, questions are raised. Lecture The Do’s and Don’t of interactive production: get some structure, plan ahead, budgetize, execute. Group Session Story Sprint - group collaborative session: (2 or 3 groups) Groups create a production plan. Assignment Blog post 11: Find a cool startup, explain its business model and why you think it is interesting for news. CLASS 11 : THINKING LIKE A STARTUP? Sharing Session Discussion around the previous assignment. We’ll talk about new business opportunities and what it means for news and journalists. Group Session Groups finalise their immersive storytelling project in order to present them at the next session. CLASS 12: FINAL PROJECT PRESENTATION. Pitch Story Sprint - group collaborative session: (2 or 3 groups) Groups present the work done during class, respecting pitch structure and going from the idea to the prototype.
