A three-bedroom, three-bath co-op in
Manhattan’s iconic El Dorado gets a
renovation that honors its history and
its Central Park views

Best Company worked with the designer to overhaul the prewar apartment’s dark, dated
interior without erasing its period details: Mouldings, hardwood floors, windows, walls, millwork,
and plaster all underwent extensive renovation.

These pages: The kitchen’s thick, marble-slab countertops and range hood create a sense of
high-functioning luxury in the fully custom kitchen. Flat-front lower cabinetry recedes into the
background, making the space seem larger. To amplify light, the upper cabinets are fitted with
architectural glass, a material authentic to the period. Pronounced crown mouldings, fabricated
in Best Company’s own millwork shops, lend a dramatic finishing touch.

Custom built-ins organize interior spaces, making beautiful use of all available space. Above:
A custom wardrobe—with mirrored doors, and glide-out shelves—turns a dark hallway into a
well-organized dressing area, with ample storage for the homeowner’s every accessory. Opposite:
Best Company’s artisan woodworkers created this custom office area, with integrated desk,
bookshelves, and file storage. The high-gloss lacquered finish, a Best Company specialty, is the
result of a labor-intensive 10-step process that results in incomparable shine and durability.

A smart layout, high-tech
mechanical systems, and
organic materials redefine
a light-filled duplex
Precision built:
An integrated fireplace-and-media
wall defines the open living area
of the loft, located on the top two
floors of the former circa-1866
American Express Company
stables, in Tribeca. The unit,
created in Best Company’s own
millwork shops, is finished in high-
gloss lacquer. We surrounded the
fireplace in stone.

We treated the richly grained oak-plank floors with a hand-applied tung-oil finish that brings
warmth to the gut-renovated interior, now configured to capture all available light.

favorite teal. Used in combination
with stainless-steel Sub-Zero

located at the heart of the
apartment—and accentuates the
beautiful grain of the wood.

This page, above: A cabled steel-and-oak staircase connects the lower-level living space—
used as a family play area—with the upper-level kitchen, adjacent to the formal dining room.
Opposite page: The kitchen’s clean-lined island, with integrated sink and storage, functions
well for both casual meals and entertaining. Among the luxuries you can’t see: a whole-house
sound system and state-of-the art mechanicals.

Above: The beautifully engineered open staircase allows light to flow throughout the lower-
level living area. Opposite: Insulated-glass doors provide access to the landscaped terrace,
taking full advantage of all natural light. Artisans in our local workshops restore vintage and
antique furnishings and fabricate custom pieces and upholstery to your exact specifications.

The strategic placement of storage and mirrors works with the cool palette to keep the light
flowing throughout the elegant, but informal, interior. The lower level functions as the family’s
primary domain, with a large eat-in-kitchen and an open living/dining area. Pocket doors slide
to reveal or conceal the kitchen from living/dining area, as needed.

Inventive storage and well-organized work/play areas are especially wise investments in a family
loft, because they help to create that clean, open look we fantasize about, yet find hard to
achieve if there is nowhere to put our “stuff.” In addition to the kitchen’s well-planned upper and
lower cabinetry, topped with slabs of beautifully grained marble, the design incorporates under-
the-window drawers and shelves in the family dining area, which also features a display wall
designed to showcase children’s art—an elegant alternative to yesterday’s refrigerator magnets.
The existing mechanicals were retrofitted with “air scrubbers.” To improve overall air and water
quality, we installed a variety of filters for drinking water tap, showers, and humidifiers.

Ample storage is essential to clutter-free loft living. Opposite: Best Company’s made-to-measure
built-ins take advantage of an underutilized hallway at the center of the space, without blocking
light from the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Above: Under the new staircase, open storage
provides easy access for toys, allowing for quick tidying up at the end of the day.

Upstairs are the family’s four bedrooms—one for each of the three young children and a master
suite—along with a laundry room and a wide hall fitted with a streamlined work/play area,
custom-built of walnut by Best Company. The designers made every effort to make use of
often-wasted areas in passageways, which are now fitted with custom desks, cabinetry, and a
built-in storage bench/daybed fabricated in Best Company’s workshops.

For many urban families, a spacious loft apartment is the modern equivalent of the suburban
“dream house.” But getting from fantasy to reality means finding creative ways to preserve the
industrial-era loft’s vast open spaces while introducing a sense of warmth, comfort, organization,
and— where needed and wanted—peace, privacy, and quiet.

A well-crafted Henrybuilt kitchen
introduces generous amounts
of upper and lower cabinetry
into this open-plan Tribeca loft
kitchen. Additional storage is
found in the custom wall units and
in the island with integrated sink
and seating area. This modern
kitchen remains squarely at the
heart of the home, with an open
plan that links it to the adjoining
dining area and the family room,
below it, making a welcoming
central location for family meals
as well as festive occasions.

We worked within the existing
footprint of this gut-renovated
galley kitchen—located in the
landmark El Dorado, on Central
Park West—to create an efficient,
made-to-measure workspace
with a new, built-in seating area
designed for dining, working,
and entertaining.
Handmade in our workshops
Everything from the hardwood
cabinetry to the custom
upholstered banquette and in-
house wine cellar were fabricated
in our own workshops. Every
available inch is used intelligently,
making the high-functioning
galley seem larger and brighter.
Traditional inspiration,
state-of-the-art efficiency
Pale oak floors; thick marble and
cherry countertops; Sub-Zero
refrigerator; dual-fuel range; glass-

the River House, on Sutton Place,
