  4. 4. How were the effects described ? <ul><li>“ I thought a train was going past, and all of a sudden the tiles started falling off. I slipped and was holding on to the scaffolding on the edge of the roof with my legs dangling over the edge.” </li></ul><ul><li>“ I thought an aeroplane was going over, then I fell down the stairs…” </li></ul>
  5. 5. How were the effects described ? <ul><li>“ It wasn’t like the War of the Worlds, but it was scary” </li></ul><ul><li>“ I’m 9 months pregnant and I thought I might go into labour ! I woke up and the pictures were rattling on the walls and two fell off. The TV was bouncing across the table…” </li></ul>

EFFECTS <ul><li>Properties suffered structural damage such as cracked walls </li></ul><ul><li>Chimney stacks and roof tiles fell into the street </li></ul><ul><li>People were evacuated from houses – some went to the nearby pub… </li></ul><ul><li>Streets were closed for safety reasons </li></ul><ul><li>Gas supplies were cut off and over 600 leaks reported </li></ul><ul><li>Power supplies were cut off </li></ul><ul><li>Telephone services were cut off </li></ul><ul><li>Many 999 calls were made </li></ul><ul><li>Only 1 person was hospitalised, with a head injury </li></ul><ul><li>The Channel Tunnel was designed to cope with earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 on Richter Scale </li></ul><ul><li>There were long queues at burger vans as people couldn’t cook at home or make a cup of tea </li></ul>
