Living things found in estuary Non living things found in estuary.
INTERACTION AMONG LIVING AND
NO-LIVING FOUND IN ESTUARY
•Interaction is a kind of action
that occur as two or more
objects have an effect upon
one another.
•The estuary is an ecosystem – a group
of living and non-living things
interacting with each other. The
physical environment of the ecosystem
is the habitat in which organisms live.
Estuaries are
highly dynamic environments subject
to processes occurring on the land
and in the sea, the locations, sizes
and types of habitats can change
relatively quickly, or form over years
or decades.
When an organism of the same kind live
together, they form group called
population. A population interacts with
other population to form a community.
The community interacts with air, water, soil,
sunlight and other non-living things in it
surrounding to form an ecosystem. An
ecosystem is the relationship between
biotic (living) factors and abiotic (non-
WAVES
•Refers to the movement of the
water
Example:
•Kelp, a kind of algae, has strong
root like structures that attaches
itself to rocks to keep it form being
carried away by the waves.
SALINITY
•Refers to the amount of salt in water.
•It also the measure of all salts dissolved in
water. It is measured in parts per thousand (PPT)
•35ppt average salinity of the ocean while 0.5
ppt or less in river water.
•It means that in every 1000 grams of sea water,
35 grams are salt water.
Example:
Blue crabs and mangroves have well
adjusted to the constantly changing the
salinity of water due to continuous flow of
salt water and fresh water through the
estuary.
TEMPERATURE
•Refers to the level of hotness or coldness
of water.
•It changes because of the tides and
sunlight
Example:
Some organisms use plants like mangroves
to keep themselves hidden from direct
sunlight or away from the coldness of the
TYPES OF SOIL
- The types of soil differ in the estuaries
depending on the strength of waves and
kinds of rocks present in the area.
-Some area are full of rocks, sand pebble, or
clay. Since nutrients are found in the soil,
these types of soil have an effect in the
kind of living things that live in these
ecosystem.
ABIOTIC FACTORS
Coral reefs- are the areas of
estuaries which part of subtidal
zone where biodiversity is rich.
Biodiversity refers to the
abundance of different living
organism living in an area.
SALT MARSHES
•Salt marshes are areas in the estuary that filled
with seawater during high tides and are drained
during low tides.
•Organisms found in salt marshes are clams,
mussels oysters, crabs, snails and shrimps.
•Plants found in salt marshes are sea grasses and
other plants that are tolerant of salt water. Salt
tolerant plants are called halophtyes.
MUD FLATS
•Mud flats or tidal flats are areas in estuaries
where mud from the seas or rivers is
deposited.
•They are usually the areas for migratory
birds, crabs san dollars, mussels, clams,
mollusks, shellfish and some fish.
•Algae, like sea lettuce and sea spaghetti,
provide food for the herbivores in this area.
ROCKY SHORES
•Rocky shores are areas in estuaries where solid
rocks are found.
•Animals found in the rocky shores are plankton,
brittle stars, starfish hermit crab, barnacles,
limpets, mollusks, periwinkle, shore crab,
shrimps and prawns.
•Since many of the organisms in rocky shores are
herbivores, seaweeds provide food for them.
MANGROVES FORESTS
•Areas in the estuary that are filled
with mangrove trees. It protects the
coast against erosion caused by
waves, winds and tides. They also
protect coral reefs and sea grass
beds from silting or disposition of
sand.
I. Draw an example of estuary and
describe what kind of environment is
that.
II. Compose a song/rap about
interaction among living things and
non-living things in estuary
III. Illustrate the animals found in
estuary. Write short explanation about
-WHAT ARE THE BIOTIC
FACTORS AMONG LIVING AND
NON LIVING THINGS FOUND N
ESTUARY?
-What are the abiotic factors
among living and non living
things found in estuary?
As a grade 5 pupils how
can you protect the
habitats found in estuary?
