Baltimore City Recreation Centers

  2. 2. GWWO is currently working with Baltimore City Recreation & Parks on the renovation of the 11,400-SF C.C. Jackson Community Recreation Center, and also designing 6,800-SF of additions. Initially, during an extensive Pre-Design and Study Phase, four building designs were developed by GWWO to accommodate the maximum amount of program space, while demonstrating the impact on the budget. The building was essentially divided into three parts: the existing building to be renovated, the gymnasium, and any new addition(s). At the conclusion of this feasibility study, the client chose “Option 1” which includes a major renovation to the existing building, a larger gymnasium addition and a two-story addition. The new center is being designed according to Baltimore City’s Green Building Standards, and the design team is considering installing numerous sustainable design elements, including a possible geothermal well system. 4. 4. GWWO is currently working with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks to design the Cherry Hill Community Recreation Center, a new facility located in the Cherry Hill neighborhood of Baltimore. The triangular, roughly 14 acre site, owned by the City of Baltimore, includes two existing public school buildings: Patapsco Elementary & Middle School and Cherry Hill Elementary & Middle School, and GWWO worked closely with the principals of both schools in a pre-design phase to create test fits of the building on the site to ensure the building and supporting playing fields could be accommodated on site. In addition, during this pre-design phase, GWWO led many discussions with the community to collectively refine the site plan to maximize the variety of program elements and best meet their needs. The final site plan was used to inform the building design concepts and, through an iterative process, the site design was refined to accommodate the preferred building design, allowing it to relate to the surrounding residential context. 7. 7. GWWO is currently working with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks to design the exterior restoration, interior rehabilitation, and expansion of the Rita R. Church Community Center. The existing building is adjacent to the park’s public swimming pool, and presently offers pool changing rooms and support facilities within half of its lower level. The remainder of the lower level is vacant, and the upper level is currently a covered, open-air pavilion. This project will enclose the building’s upper level and fully renovate the structure to serve as a multi-use community recreation center. The design also incorporates a new gymnasium which will be constructed in a second phase. When both phases are complete, the new center will be 26,642-SF. The design incorporates sustainable design elements, including an extensive green roof, geothermal heating and cooling system, and sustainable materials. Rita R.
