In August 2017 the world had a population total of 7.524 billion
51% of those users were regular internet users (3.819 bn)
There are also 5 billion unique mobile users today and 92 million new users are added every quarter
Another interesting statistic from the Ericsson mobility report is measuring mobile data traffic which is forecasting 7x growth by 2022.
In 2016 this was 8.8 exabytes however this is expected to be 71 exabytes driven by the extent of video of all types
Did you know that Android now has 84.8% market share in the mobile OS market? It is leaps and bounds beyond IOS More interestingly still in March 2017 Windows has now been surpassed by Android for OS install base worldwide.
With that extent of uptake in devices and consumers how do you manage content and consumption of business data on mobiles? Do you have a strategy to manage data leakage to and from employee mobile devices?

So, lets explore some of the key technology trends in a little more detail then walk through these key facets of digitalisation
The real power of Cloud Native thinking is in the ability to integrate Cloud services from suppliers across the internet to create new solutions quickly using API’s and micro service for which just about ever commodity service function or process already exists in some way.
It is inevitable that the cloud will be the underpinning element of your digital transformation story. The cloud empowers you to create and deliver new experiences anywhere with ease and with minimal investment.
The Cloud has evolved over the past 10 years and is now very different and geared to the needs of developers. Developing services that are able to react to radical changes in demand is really what this is about. Cloud native is a real change from the past of applications built on partially scalable infrastructure.
Cloud native offers benefits in instant and endless scalability paid for aligned to demand making Cloud Native applications typically 50% or more cheaper for most Cloud Foundry and Containers are at the heart of delivering code anywhere and doing so with real gains in manageability. Imagine being able to deploy and manage an application, data or algorithm to a vehicle on the move without having to worry about the infrastructure.
Developers are now freed to create and build your business differentiation rather than worry about infrastructure constraints.
Cloud Native is all about making something instantly available, easy to manage, easy to scale and cost effective.
API’s are the life blood of any digital service. AI, ML, ioT, analytics, and Blockchain are likely to exist in some form across your organisations before long An API is a common language that enables developers and other technologies to exchange information seamlessly API’s effectively enable developers to reduce their development effort and consider what is important in your specific service
API’s are the key enabler for enabling cross department efficiency, in building an ecosystem and enabling your partners to work together seamlessly
There are API’s for just about every common task that exists today meaning that you can integrate and create at a pace profoundly different than yesterday
The API economy refers to these API services being valuable assets and even monetisable, one of our customers estimates that the impact of their API strategy has bought 130m euros of additional revenue per annum.
Having an API strategy aligned to your business growth is now key consideration for most organisations in my experience
Micro-services enable accelerated development by creating building blocks of reusable services Micro-services are a far more scalable way of building applications in an enterprise as the segmentation enables devolved and parallel development to occur
A traditional app is designed in tiers and is scaled using servers, a micro service is a building block equivalent to a function within that application. The benefit is that each can be developed, scaled, replaced, upgraded, improved easily without interrupting other services.
However, operational considerations of adopting micro services are more important than ever. Each service will evolve faster than ever before and there is often a need to tightly couple the developer and operations loop due to the increased integration complexity. Also, consider compliance and regulation when your new digital applications are formed with micro services from across the world and the internet. Supplier management and paying for services that are constantly scaling up and down with demand introduces new levels of unpredictability causing challenges also in financial forecasting
Rather than the pure technology it is more important to consider you will operationalise your new digital services, and operationalise in line with the pace of development and evolution.
In a recent study by the analyst Forester 41% of you are struggling to manage the rate of technology change, the problem is very real and I would anticipate higher than 41% in reality

Customer success today is hugely complex and enabled by technology however it is really engaging customers that matters. To achieve this data is all important and data drives ever more personalised experiences. Did you know that content generated by a user drives 6.9x higher engagement than brand generated content?
Organisations that offer poor experiences and are not embracing digital engagement channels will struggle to compete. The era of the customer is now.
Driving operational efficiency means modernisation as most organisations have already reaped the benefits of virtualisation or offshoring services.
The next level of efficiency is driven from Automation and AI. Luckily automation and AI are also augmenting your customer experience in an always on society. That said, changing your IT heritage still requires real commitment. One impactful approach we have seen in driving lasting change is in the use of ‘Shock and Awe’ teams. ‘Shock and Awe’ teams can be used to disrupt service delivery by building new digital experiences. This is best delivered as a short term approach to demonstrate change.
This approach must operate within principles from the outset to a ‘build operate transfer’ method handing back control to a re-skilled re-invigorated delivery organisation.
Empowering people is about changing mind set not only the skill set.
Delivering an engagement and communication programme is an essential early stage activity.
Empowering people also means ensuring that they have the right tools to be more productive.
Look at modern productivity suites and ensure you embrace SaaS but do so securely as to not introduce compliance challenges with GDPR coming.
Nurturing talent and creating an environment for an ever more diverse team is important.
Attitude is everything as it drives aptitude!
Millenials now also form over 30% of the average workforce. Millenials are digital natives and being always on and connected are their norm, they have different expectations on your business.
Generation Z are only 1% today however they promise to be even more digitally native. Generation Z will have even higher expectations having grown accustomed to the seamless augmentation of their knowledge with artificial intelligence.
In the same study for Forester I mentioned earlier 33% of enterprises are struggling with attracting and retaining digital skills.
Offering opportunities to drive meaningful impact will be required to retain top talent.
