any of its inhabitants came from foreign
lands and had to adapt to local culture
while striving to preserve their customs.
Hadrian’s Wall was more than just a physical
wall; it was a system of defences and commu-
nications that made use of major roads, mile
castles and numerous forts along its 73-mile
path. Emperor Hadrian was responsible for its
construction and he provided input on some of
its defence features. His knowledge was partly a
result of having travelled across the Empire.
The inscriptions found along the Wall point to
the nature of its builders: the army of Britain.
Three legions of troops provided the main body
of men, with each consisting of about 5,000
infantrymen. These troops were responsible for
much of the construction, but they also received
help from auxiliary units. Their collaboration
on the building project took many years, and
historians believe that construction might have
started before Emperor Hadrian’s visit in AD 122.
