74TH REPUBLIC DAY
n India, the Republic Day and
Independence Day are the two
most significant national holi-
days. Across the nation, people
celebrate the day with fervour
and patriotism. This Republic
Day parade will be a unique
spectacle. The ceremonial
boulevard Rajpath’s new name,
Kartavya Path, will see the first
appearance of tanks, weapons,
and soldiers.
32,000 E-TICKETS
This year, Central Vista Avenue
will host the 74th Republic Day
festivities. According to de-
fence ministry officials, the
Central government has made
32,000 tickets available for on-
line purchase by the general
public. According to the news
agency, they stated that all of-
ficial invitations for the cere-
monial event will be sent online

MAKE IN INDIA WEAPONS
In an effort by the government
to move away from the rem-
nants of the colonial era, the 21-
gun salute given to the Presi-
dent prior to the start of the
parade will be fired for the first
time by Indian guns rather than
British guns.
This year, as the government
pushes its Make in India initia-
tive, 105 mm Indian field guns
will replace the vintage artil-
lery with 25-pounder guns that
typically fires the thunderous
ceremonial 21-Gun Salute dur-
ing the Republic Day celebra-
tions. Along with the IL-38
planes, the Kartavya Path will
see the debut of formations like
“Bheem” and “Vajrang.”
“DAREDEVILS”
MOTORCYCLISTS
Another highlight of this year’s
Republic Day is a group of
“Daredevils” motorcyclists
from the Corps of Signals who
will participate in the parade
under the co-command of a fe-
male officer. Women will join
the BSF Camel Contingent for

INDIGENOUSLY-MADE 105 MM FIELD
GUNS TO BE USED FOR THE 1ST TIME
Before 2023, British guns were used to accord the
21-gun salute to the President of India before the
parade. Now, however, under the government’s ‘Make in
India’ scheme, indigenously-made 105 mm field guns
will replace the vintage artillery of 25-powder guns.
VETERANS’ TABLEAU
Another highlight of the parade this year will be
Veterans’ Tableau, with the theme ‘Towards
India’s Amrit Kaal with Resolve – A Veterans’
Commitment’. It will provide a glimpse of veterans’
contributions in the last 75 years and their initiatives
in shaping India’s future during ‘Amrit Kaal’.

ADDRESSING INEFFICIENCIES
New Delhi (ANI):
Speaking about the con-
troversial BBC docu-
mentary on Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi
and the Gujarat riots in
2002, Congress Thiru-
vananthapuram MP
Shashi Tharoor said
that the argument that
it would affect India’s
sovereignty was not
convincing. He added
that India’s national se-
curity and sovereignty
weren’t fragile.
Talking about the
BBC documentary,
Shashi Tharoor said, “I
am glad that the govern-
ment has said it won’t
interfere with freedom
of expression. The
youth organisation in
Kerala organised the
screening as a protest
against censorship,
which I was also in fa-
vour of.”
He further added,
“The argument that it
will affect India’s sover-
eignty is not convinc-
ing. It’s not that fragile.
Our national security
and sovereignty are not
something that can be
affected so easily by a
documentary
. We are a
strong country
. The ar-
gument that the issue
has been laid to rest in a
legal sense is accurate.
The argument that peo-
ple continue to have
their own misgivings
and reservations is also
accurate.”
“In our democracy
, all
issues can be discussed.
If the govt had asked for
my advice, I would have
told them to ignore it
and that it be passed,”
he added.
Further, speaking out
about Anil Antony re-
signing from Congress,
Tharoor said that he
hadn’t spoken to Anil. “I
think he can speak for
himself,” said the Con-
gress MP
.
Veteran Congress
leader and former min-
ister AK Antony’s son,
Anil, on Wednesday, re-
signed from all his posts
in the party following
“intolerant calls” and
“abuses” over his tweet
against the controver-
sial BBC documentary
.
Antony took to Twit-

Pompeo says Sushma
was not important
Washington (PTI):
Former US Secretary
of State Mike Pompeo
has said he never saw
his counterpart Sush-
ma Swaraj as an “im-
portant political play-
er” but got along fa-
mously with External
Affairs Minister S
Jaishankar, hitting it
off with him in their
first meeting itself.
In his latest book
‘Never Give an Inch:

ica I Love’ that hit the
stores on Tuesday,
Pompeo describes
Swaraj somewhat dis-
paragingly, using the
American slang words
“goofball” and “heart-
land political hack”
for her.
Swaraj served as ex-
ternal affairs minister
in the first Modi gov-
ernment from May
2014 to May 2019. She
died in August 2019.
“On the Indian side,
my original counter-
part was not an impor-
tant player on the In-
dian foreign policy
team. Instead, I
worked much more
closely with National
Security Advisor Ajit
Doval, a close and
trusted confidant of
PM Modi,” 59-year-old
Pompeo writes in his
book. “My second In-
dian counterpart was
Subrahmanyam Jais-
hankar. In May 2019,
we welcomed “J” as
India’s new foreign
minister. I could not
have asked for a better
counterpart. English
is one of the seven lan-
guages he speaks, and
his is somewhat better
than mine,” writes the
former top American
diplomat.

“I do not think the

just how close the

2019,” he wrote. In-
dia in February 2019

screened by a students’
group on the campus
of the University of
Hyderabad last Saturday,
officials of the central
institute confirmed
Tuesday amid reports of
similar screenings across
Kerala by youth organi-
sations affiliated to CPM
and Congress. Fraternity
Movement, the group
that organised the Hyder-
abad screening, thanked
the audience of around
200 students for turning
up to watch “India: The
Modi Question” and de-
clared it would arrange to
screen the second part of
the documentary soon.
The statement coincid-
ed with the university
instituting an inquiry into
the screening and ABVP
demanding “concrete
action” against those
behind it within 48 hours.
Registrar Devesh Nigam
said the dean of students’
welfare had rushed to the
venue on January 21 and
requested the organisers
to stop the screening, but
they remained defiant.

New Delhi: The Edi-
tors Guild of India has
written to Electronics
and Information Tech-
nology Minister Ash-
wini Vaishnaw, urg-
ing him to expunge
the amendments to IT
Rules that seek to direct
social media platforms
to take down news or
information identified
as fake by the PIB's
Fact Checking Unit.
In a letter sent to
Vaishnaw, the Guild
asked the ministry to
initiate consultations
with press bodies, me-
dia organisations and
other stakeholders on
the regulatory frame-
work for digital media,
so as not to undermine
press freedom.
The Guild said it was
deeply concerned by
the proposed amend-
ment giving sweeping
powers to the Press In-
formationBureau(PIB).
This new procedure
basically serves to
make it easier to muzzle
the free press, and will
give sweeping powers to
the PIB, or any 'other
agency authorised by
the Central government
for fact checking', to
force online intermedi-
aries to take down con-
tent that the govern-
ment may find problem-
atic, it said.
The Guild noted that
the role of the PIB was
limited to disseminat-
ing information to news
organisations on affairs
of the government.
By this proposed
amendment, sweeping
regulatory powers are
sought to be given to
this agency
, which is pa-
tently illegal and un-
constitutional, it said
in the letter.
The Guild reiterated
that regardless of the
absence of procedures,
the amendment was in
itself an illegal move as
the PIB has no constitu-
tional authority to be a
regulator of the press
in any capacity
.

In his latest book ‘Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the Amer- ica I Love’ that hit the stores on Tuesday, Pompeo describes Swaraj somewhat dis- paragingly, using the American slang words “goofball” and “heart- land political hack” for her. Swaraj served as ex- ternal affairs minister in the first Modi gov- ernment from May 2014 to May 2019. She died in August 2019. “On the Indian side, my original counter- part was not an impor- tant player on the In- dian foreign policy team. PROUD WINNERS OF GALLANTRY AWARDS KEY HIGHLIGHTS New Delhi: The Edi- tors Guild of India has written to Electronics and Information Tech- nology Minister Ash- wini Vaishnaw, urg- ing him to expunge the amendments to IT Rules that seek to direct social media platforms to take down news or information identified as fake by the PIB's Fact Checking Unit. In a letter sent to Vaishnaw, the Guild asked the ministry to initiate consultations with press bodies, me- dia organisations and other stakeholders on the regulatory frame- work for digital media, so as not to undermine press freedom. The Guild said it was deeply concerned by the proposed amend- ment giving sweeping powers to the Press In- formationBureau(PIB). This new procedure basically serves to make it easier to muzzle the free press, and will give sweeping powers to the PIB, or any 'other agency authorised by the Central government for fact checking', to force online intermedi- aries to take down con- tent that the govern- ment may find problem- atic, it said. The Guild noted that the role of the PIB was limited to disseminat- ing information to news organisations on affairs of the government. By this proposed amendment, sweeping regulatory powers are sought to be given to this agency , which is pa- tently illegal and un- constitutional, it said in the letter. The Guild reiterated that regardless of the absence of procedures, the amendment was in itself an illegal move as the PIB has no constitu- tional authority to be a regulator of the press in any capacity .
