RDF (Resource Description Framework) / triples

Making the logic of our information understandable to machines
6. Semantic Web
The Web is what this is

7. Semantic Web
The Web is what this is
really about !
Web identifiers (URIs)
Web architecture
HTTP protocol
W3C standards
8. Linked Data
The Web is about creating
LINKS in an open, shared
global information space
10. Applications of IFLA Namespaces

11. Dataset applications
“collections of structured metadata —
descriptions of things, such as books … a
collection of library records”
W3C Library Linked Data Incubator Group
Catalogue data is mapped to RDF elements from
multiple namespaces
Mix-and-match
IFLA elements available in FR and ISBD namespaces
16. Element sets
“classes and attributes used to describe entities
of interest … elements to be used by others to
describe such entities”
W3C LLD
Metadata schema entities represented as RDF
classes
Entity attributes (fields) and relationships
represented as RDF properties
17. Element set applications
Interoperability of schema represented by
relationships between RDF classes and
properties in respective schema namespaces
Using ontological properties from W3C namespaces
• E.g. RDF Schema (rdfs) subPropertyOf
Datasets can be processed against ontology
maps to generate new data triples
The semantic in Semantic Web!
22. Value vocabularies
“a controlled list of allowed values for an
element … include: thesauri, … authority files, …,
and other types of knowledge organization
systems.”
W3C LLD
E.g. MulDiCat
Multilingual dictionary of cataloguing
Useful for namespace translations, user displays, etc.
23. ISBD area 0 value vocabularies
Content form and media type
Development of RDF mappings to the RDA/ONIX
Framework for Resource Categorization
RDA content form and media type already mapped
Improves interoperability of datasets and
format-based resource discovery
25. IFLA Namespaces Technical Group
Representation from IFLA sections and groups
Guidelines on translating namespaces: in
development
By end of 2012
Guidelines on using and extending namespaces:
proposed for 2013
Investigation of “commons” namespaces for
extension and interoperability: proposed for
2013

41. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
How it all began:
Project achieved between the Ontology
Engineering Group of the Politechnic University of
Madrid (http://www.oeg-upm.net/) and the
National Library of Spain.
The work began at the beginning of 2011 as a
small proof of concept: publication in LD of works
by/related to Cervantes
Eventually, it evolved into a bigger part of the
catalogue. It was presented en December 2011, as
datos.bne.es
42. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
What's in now:
Authority file.
Bibliographic records of modern and ancient
monographies, sound recordings and printed music
2.4 million bibliographic records, and 4 million
authorities records
58 million triples
Links to VIAF, DNB, Dbpedia, SUDOC, Libris
43. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
Data model and vocabularies:
Based on IFLA models and vocabularies.
FRBR as reference model
FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD and ISBD, as published in
OMR as vocabularies.
44. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
How we looked at the data:
Bibliographic record → frbr:Manifestation
Authority record → frbr:Work, frbr:Expresion,
frad:person,corporate body, frsad:Thema
Access points in bib. records: relationships
45. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
How we migrated:
Mapping 1: Classification.
Mapping 2: Relationships
Mapping 3: Annotation
46. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
How we dealt with RDF (Marimba):
More details on http://www.slideshare.net/DanielVilaSuero/datos-enlazados-bne-and-marimba
47. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
Publishing:
Datos.bne.es site.
Datadumps
SPARQL Endpoint
Included in Datahub and Bibserver
48. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
To do list:
More research and refinements needed in
annotation and relationships.
Include all kind of resources.
Design and experiment with attractive human-
readable interfaces
More links
49. Linked Data at the National Library of Spain
Main features:
Constructed using IFLA standards and
vocabularies
