Outside of his professional pursuits, Felix Rippy is an accomplished distance runner. Whether training for the next marathon or simply adding mileage to weekly runs, runners need to undergo proper training to become effective at distance running. There are a number of ways runners can condition to run longer distances without injury.
  3. 3. DISTANCE RUNNING  At first, runners should consider lowering speed when adding more miles. Accommodating for extra distance by adding around two minutes per mile will provide the energy needed to complete lengthier runs. As runners get accustomed to longer distances, they should add one or two fast runs each week. The harder runners train, the more endurance and speed their bodies build for long-distance runs. Runners also should provide their bodies with ample rest throughout distance training. Setting aside no less than two breaks each week will help the body adjust to the stress this type of training causes, particularly for new runners. During rest, the body more easily overcomes physical strain and builds more strength. In addition, taking weekly breaks minimizes the risk of sustaining injuries.
