Editor's Notes
Speaker Notes:I’d like to share how the concept of FasTracKids began. In 1997, a businessman met an educator who had developed a traditional curriculum that was designed to teach children how to become more creative. It was paper based so it relied 100% on the teacher to deliver the content. The content of the curriculum was very interesting to the businessman since he kept wondering why we can’t we teach employees to be better leaders before they get to the workplace. We had a vision to build these skills within children and to start when they were young. To be able to create a foundation that they could be successful not only in school, but also in life. And to make them as well rounded as possible. So, he bought the curriculum and invested 3 million dollars to move it from paper based to an interactive technology format you will see today.
Speaker Notes: (Read slide. Stop at the orange circle last. Convey that we will be discussing some of the research later in the presentation.)
Speaker Notes:FasTracKids began with a global perspective. We want to transcend geography, politics, religion, and language because one thing is for certain….children all around the world should have access to a program that maximizes their potential and gives them the foundation for success in life.
Speaker Notes: (Discuss the language you will make available in your center.)
(PPV1 video clip)VO: Why are these kids smiling? They’re FasTracKids! For two hours each week they explore, discover, create and imagine as they journey through fun filled interactive learning adventures.Josiah’s Mom: “I’d say three words to describe the program are exciting, innovative and creative.”VO: With the FasTracKids unique program, your child will enjoy learning so much… you’ll be smiling too!VO: FasTracKids is a fun enrichment education program for 3 to 7 year olds. Using revolutionary delivery methods to achieve outstanding results, children attend weekly sessions where they learn how to focus, how to speak with confidence in front of others, how to use the power of their brain creatively, how to use reasoning skills, how to transfer knowledge and how to work and communicate effectively with others.Olivia’s Mom: “I think the thing that I’ve noticed that is probably the biggest difference in Olivia is that she no longer has fear of being in front of a crowd so she gets up and speaks freely. If she goes somewhere and she sees a microphone, she grabs the microphone and she’s ready to talk or sing and that’s something that she would have never done before.”VO: Research has increased the awareness that when dealing with young children there is a very short, formative, timeframe … or window of opportunity…when children must receive the proper mental stimulation if they are to maximize their potential.Scott’s Mom: “He knows about buoyancy, he’s talking about molecules and he’s four!”
Speaker Notes:There is an old saying-“Tell me and I forget (point to 20% on graph)Show me and I remember (point to 50% on graph)Let me do and I understand.” (point to 90% on graph)Review graph with parents. Reinforce the need to be active in a classroom environment to learn.
To conduct the research, the NIOST used three common tests used globally.EVT: This is an untimed, individual intelligence test, administered orally. This test is to determine the body of words a student is able to define, describe, or explain either orally or in writing. Typically, a singular word is spoken by the examiner. The student is required to describe in their own words what it is. For example, if I said, “Shampoo”, the student might say, “wash your hair or to clean your head.”PPVT: This is also an untimed, individual intelligence test, administered orally. Specifically, the PPVT-III can also be used for assessing the English vocabulary of non-English-speaking individuals. The examiner presents a series of pictures to a student. There are four to six pictures to a page, and each is numbered. The examiner states a word describing one of the pictures and asks the student to point to or say the number of the picture that the word describes. For example, if I had different pictures of animals and I said, “moooo”, the child would point to the picture of the cow. Or if I said the word, “pride”, they might pick the picture of a lion since the word pride represents the lion and his family.SSRT: This test provides an inventory of a student's ability to apply the skills necessary to meet with success in school settings and for eventual success in employment settings. The 40-item scale of observable pre-social skills has been socially validated and determined to be important for students' school success. General behavior such as making eye contact, offering help, making a request, stating an opinion, and staying on topic are assessed. Why did we choose to measure both expressive (speaking) and receptive (hearing) vocabulary? Vocabulary is fairly easy to measure in young children and almost 100 years of research has proven that the size of a child’s vocabulary is directly linked with his short –and long-term literacy, academics, and social/relational achievements. In addition, research also shows that success in 1st grade in Primary School is dependent on what children learn before a child enters school. How children perform on the receptive vocabulary test is directly linked to how they will perform in Primary 4th grade and Secondary 1st grade. Why did we measure social skills? For many years, it was thought that someone would be successful if they were “smart”, if they had a high IQ or intelligence quota. We know that it takes more than book smarts to be successful in school as well as in life. Non-cognitive abilities are also required for success. Skills such as motivation, sociability, ability to work with others, focus, self-regulation, and self-esteem are considered by some researchers to be even more important than cognitive intelligence. Children that demonstrate a higher level of social acumen perform better in school than those who demonstrate a lower level.
(PPV4 video clip)Video Script:VO: An exciting aspect of the FasTracKids program is the children’s videotaped speaking opportunities. Children participate in videotaped presentations that are designed to help them in four ways. First, they learn to communicate in full sentences; second, they learn to think before they talk; third, they learn to plan their thoughts; and fourth, they increase their vocabulary. By developing children's speaking skills at an early age, they can overcome the fears and inhibitions that many older people experience.Female Student: "Welcome to the Fast Track weather station. Today it will be sunny at the beaches and rainy on the island. Stay tuned. We'll be right back.”Principal of New York School Using FasTracKids Program: “When the children first would videotape and then they saw themselves immediately thereafter, it was as if they were watching a major motion picture on television and they got very, very excited. “The children are now requesting and they use a microphone because they want to make sure in their own words that they are heard by everyone. They love to watch their first session of videotaping and their comments are always, "I didn't speak. I didn't speak loud enough. I didn't speak clearly enough," and they are now prompting one another to speak in complete sentences.”
Speaker Notes: 1. You may review these pictures with the parents, pointing to various activities the children participate in. clockwise – public speaking, role plays, collaborative projects, experiments, analysis and critical thinking activities, group projects.2. You may replace these pictures with pictures of students from your center. Make sure to get parent approval first.3. You may replace this slide and insert a demo lesson from the program. If so, go no longer than 15 minutes.
