2. What is a Multi-Modal text?
 The word ‘Multi-Modal’ simply means ‘to have more than one mode’.
Therefore, a Multi-Modal text is any text (TV programme, film, commercial
etc) that communicates messages to the audience using a variety of
different modes.
 A film trailer is an excellent example of a Multi-Modal text, as it
communicates messages to audience in many different modes, such as;
written text, on screen spoken language, moving images, music and sound
effects.

In the trailer, all on screen text is in a bold, metallic,
futuristic font.
This connects to the theme and setting of the film. The
film is set in the future in a hyper-futuristic world, so
having on screen text presented to the audience in this
style reminds them of the genre and style of the film
overall.
Spoken language The consistent use of the word ‘robot’, and formal
commands being given to these ‘robots’, such as
‘respond’ and ‘retrieve, combined with the
conversations about ‘potential killer robots’.
Similar to the impact on the audience from on screen
these formal, one word references remind the audience
that the film is set far into the future, conveying the sci-fi
genre to them. References to ‘killer robots’ has an
impact on the audience as they are attracted to seeing
the action for themselves.
Moving images Scenes such as the future concept of an Audi car and
robot technologies.
These future cars and technologies displayed in the
are quite extraordinary and impressive, attracting the
audience and drawing them in.
Sound effects Gunshots and explosions are present throughout the
trailer for I-Robot.
These action packed sound effects have an exhilarating
effect on the audience, which makes the trailer far more
interesting and attractive.
Music The robotic ‘beeping’ sound played throughout the
trailer, sounding similar to a computer or machine.
Reminds the audience of the genre, adding to the
scientific feel of the trailer. This makes it seem more
appealing and attractive, improving the overall quality of
the trailer.
