DEFINITION:-  Quality assurance refers to system for monitoring outcome of professional interventions & departmental activities compared with established standard , to evaluate & document appropriateness & effectiveness of practices.  Quality Assurance is a process, which is concern with evaluation of policies, procedure , job- Description, orientation schedules in services & charting which are related to patient care & outcome of it.

PURPOSES:-  To set standard for care & services.  To evaluate the care & services provided.  To initiate changes in care or productivity , if does meet the expected standard.  Assess competence of medical staff to prevent future mistakes.  Bring to notice of hospital administration and regarding deficiencies & its corrections  Help patient & potential patients by improving quality of care.

  7. 7. How to maintain quality assurance in nursing  Sound organization planning for hospital nsg. Services  A written statement of purposes & objectives of nsg. Services  A plan of organizational chart is also made  Policy and administrative manuals- Nurses notes.  Standard protocol for the major procedure
  8. 8.  Nursing practice manuals –for safe & effective care and to use available resources effectively.  Master staffing patterns for equal distribution of staff.  Provision of adequate supervision with continous evaluation.  Nursing service administrative meeting.  Planning for In-service educations.

CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE PLAN  It is stated in clearly terms of desired & results.  It is put into writing.  People who also be responsible or it implementation have drafted it.  It has been communicated to all those it affects for their comments.  One person is ultimately accountable for its implementation.  A specific data is established for its completion; earliest dates are established for intermediate milestones as appropriate.
  10. 10.  Criteria for success of the plan & how to apply those criteria are also determined.  Intermediate review of steps for go/no go decisions or revisions of the plan are lacked through out the implementation period.  Potential problem that may arise during are identified and anticipated with preventive action.  Supervisor of the plan is held responsibilities for reporting progress and revision to plan on a regular basis to superiors and to all those involved with implementation.

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM  A Quality assurance program are specially designed programs to promote excellence in nursing  A Quality assurance program in a health care is designed to demonstrate and monitor the facility and actual performance against established standard on criteria.  Quality assurance programme enable nursing to be accountable to society for the quality of care it provides.
  12. 12. COMPONENTS OF QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAMME  Monitoring and evaluating care and services.  Identifying , hiring and retaining the appropriate personnel.  Meeting rules and regulations.  Speaking to risk management issues.  Addressing and resolving any identified problem / issues.

  15. 15.  Structure :- A structure evaluation or audit focuses on the environment in which care is provided.  Process:- The focus of the process evaluation is the nature and the Sequence of activities carried out by nurses implementing the Nursing process. . Outcome :- Outcome evaluation focuses on measurable changes in the end result of nursing care

ROLE OF NURSE ADMINISTRATIVE IN ORGANIZING Q.A.P  Decide upon the philosophy .  Make certain that you know what you wish to evaluate.  Formulate objectives.  Set standards.  Enlist experts guidance.  Plan carefully and select the evaluation tool.  Work co-operatively.  Publish the report of result.
  17. 17. FROM QUALITY ASSURANCE TO QUALITY IMPROVEMENT  It concern about the spiralling costs of health care, coupled with the success of industrial models for quality improvement, has led to a strong commitment.  To quality improvement in the 1990s.

  21. 21. From the patient point of view, one of the most important outcomes of quality improvement is the “Recognition that patient satisfaction is as improvement as customer satisfaction in retail business”.
