  1. 1. PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES FOR THE PREVENTION OF FOOD LOSSES AND WASTES FLW 2 ND REGIONAL DIALOGUE Murillo Freire Junior Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation BRAZIL
  2. 2. 2015 Governance and Alliances Axis • We are issuing technical notes to improve some amendments of the Brazilian Federal Chamber and Federal Senate: Senate Bill Nº738/2015 and House Bill Nº3070/2015; • In order to regulate food donation another seven bills were introduced in 2015: Chamber Bill 1748/2015; 1788/2015; 2131/2015; 2352/2015; 2194/2015; 2574/2015 and 2775/2015 .
  3. 3. 2015 Research and Technology Axis • Online participation on the course "Global Postharvest Loss Prevention: Fundamentals, Technologies, and Actors" organized by the University of Illinois and the ADM Institute (February); • In the second edition of the same course (June), I became an assistant professor with the orientation of new students; • Participation in the First International Congress on Prevention of Post-harvest Loss, held in Rome (October) with a presentation of work on losses in the banana chain.
  4. 4. 2015 Research and Technology Axis • Participation in a Consultative Workshop entitled: "Defining an e-learning curriculum on Postharvest Food Loss Assessment" Organized by FAO - held at the World Food Program (WFP) headquarters on October, Rome, Italy; • The Workshop was jointly organized by the Agroindustries Division and the Office of Development of Associations of Defense and Capacity of Rural Infrastructure.
  5. 5. 2015 Communication and Dissemination Axis Embrapa organized and carried out three seminars to broaden the discussion on reducing losses and waste: • Food and Nutrition Security: route, research and perspectives (April 10); • Loss and waste reduction and Food and Nutrition Security (April 30); • Food and Nutrition Security Risk (June 12).
  6. 6. 2015 Communication and Dissemination Axis • Roundtable conference at the 5th Congress on Food and Nutrition Security Council linked to the Ministry of Social Development (CONSEA); Conference untitled Food Losses and Waste in Brazil: An Agenda for Government and Society. Seminar held at Brasília/DF with discussion board of Embrapa, FAO - Brazil and University of Campinas/SP.
  7. 7. 2016 Governance and Alliances Axis • Participation in a public hearing of the Committee on Agriculture and Agrarian Reform of the Federal Senate in Brasília/DF ( June 16) to discuss the establishment of a National Policy to Combat Food Waste. • The public hearing, which was requested by the committee's president, Senator Ana Amélia (PP-RS) and Senator Lasier Martins (PDT-RS), was the last of three meetings to instruct the Senate Bill Nº 672, Nº 675 and Nº 738/2015.
  8. 8. 2016 Governance and Alliances Axis It was schedule The First Meeting of the Secretariat of Support for the National Committee to Combat Food Losses and Waste. Date: Nov 28; • Discussion about the formation of a Brazilian Network for the Reduction of FLW and a National Committee for Reduction of FLW; • Organization of activities to be developed, responsibilities and schedule for implementation.
  9. 9. 2016 Governance and Alliances Axis The First Meeting of the Secretariat of Support for the National Committee to Combat Food Losses and Waste. Participants: • Secretariat of Food and Nutrition Security and International Assistance of the Ministry of Social an Agrarian Development (MDSA) – Kathleen Oliveira Machado; • Representatives of the Save Food Brazil Network; • Food Losses and Waste Focal Points of the FAO Representation in Brazil ( Alan Bojanic; Gustavo Chianca and Juliana Rosseto); • Focal Points of the FAO Representation in Latin America and Caribbean was invited (Tania Santivanez).
  10. 10. 2016 Research and Technology Axis • Elaboration and submission of a research and transfer proposal of project presented at EMBRAPA/DF to reduce losses in the Banana chain in Acre/AC. • Embrapa/DF has created an arrangement for projects on the thematic line "Value Aggregation" where project proposals can be submitted in the subject of food losses and waste. • My research center Embrapa Agroindústria de Alimentos defined as a highlight for the year actions on food losses and wastes.
  11. 11. 2016 Communication and Dissemination Axis Presented lectures: • Sustainability and Food Seminar: The Road to Reducing Waste. (March 15 - Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro). The event addressed the optimization of processes in the food value chain and how sustainable practices can be inserted in this context. • Panel: Agriculture: Good practices in planting, harvesting, transportation and storage of food. Lecture held at the Business Forum of Agribusiness (May 04 – FIRJAN - Industries Federation of the state of Rio de Janeiro) entitled "Main aspects for Reduction of food losses and waste in Brazil ".
  12. 12. 2016 Communication and Dissemination Axis Presented lectures: • Lecture held at the event organized by the Swiss House in virtue of the Olympic Games, entitled Food Safety Conference held on Set. 15. • Creation the web site Save Food Brasil (May) www.savefoodbrasil.org www.savefoodbrasil.com.br

  14. 14. 2016 Communication and Dissemination Axis • Creating a thematic page on the Embrapa website: https://www.embrapa.br/tema-perdas-e-desperdicio-de- alimentos; • On October 20, launched as part of the World Food Day, Embrapa, WWF-Brazil and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO - Brazil) initiated the digital action "Waste Mania" through the hashtag #MinhaGastromania.
  15. 15. 2017 • Invitation to join the 3rd SAVE FOOD Congress in Düsseldorf on the 4th of May 2017 and take the opportunity to sit down together and discuss further collaboration.
